Looks like the Mississippi River will be rising for the next few days. Will this negatively affect the trout bite down there? I want to go this weekend but I don't know the area well enough to understand how a rising river affects the trout.

I went hunting down there this past weekend and did a little fishing, but didnt catch much. I was thinking because it was a falling tide that pushed the saltwater out along with the trout. Any help or tips is greatly appreciated as im trying to go back this weekend with my dad.

Launch at the Duvic Pump station launch...leads to Hospital bay near yellow Cotton bay...start fishing.

There should be fish all around there. Many areas accessible by boat from there.

Will make the bite a little tougher depending on how murky the water gets, but still should find some fish. Going to be a quick rise and just to 5' so we still should be good.

Bite has been a little different so far with this warm weather. The trout started stacking up in the deep holes/ledges a few weeks ago after the cool snap. Weekend before last we caught the majority of our trout back out on the edges where major passes were dumping out of cuts into the bays. Caught some on ledges near flats in Pass A Loutre. Seen some reports of catching in the jump/grand pass on the ledges. Should be able to catch them on ledges in an around Baptiste Collette.

Maybe DaHammer will offer up some advice. He is always on the fish.

Thanks for the tips. The only place i found some fish was in Mardi Grass pass. And that was only because the birds were diving pretty hard. But that was short lived.

I don't normally go as far north as Mardi Gras cut this time of year so I'm no help there but I would concentrate south of Venice rather than north of it.

Remember the freshwater will always be on top of the salt in the river so just because the river rises doesn't mean it's done. However they will likely move some.

Last weekend was too rough to fish the river we fished yellow cotton and there are zillions of trout but we literally caught 173 to keep 17. My kids had fun but the keeper trout haven't made it there yet cold weather will get them there just not sure about this week.

I would probably look at the cuts off South pass figuring the salt water will be closer there. If you aren't familiar with S Pass stay in the middle and you will be fine and put put into any cut as there can be sand bars and rocks in the mouths of some of them. They should all have fish however.

I won't be down there this weekend chasing youth deer so can't give you further intel.

Thanks. You gave me the confidence to go down there and try this weekend. I have ran south pass before so i can give that a shot as well.

Do you find a rising or falling tide better for trout?

What about live bait? is it needed? can you even get it down there? How would you keep it alive in the river?

I find trout don't care if falling or rising, just need moving water. Two weekends ago, it was low tide early and then rising all day. We caught them early and then bite would stop for a couple hours. Would pick back up when tide was rising.

We don't use live bait in the fall because it generally doesn't matter. Live bait can't hurt though. We Dat bait will post on their FB page if they have live shrimp. You can call marinas. Supposed to be cooler this weekend so any decent bait bucket aerator should keep shrimp alive at least long enough to use them two mornings.

I don't use live bait anymore the shrimp knock off's like the Marker 54 are just as good and last for ever.

When I do get live bait We Dat is fantastic great people helpful and run a good business I would get from them if needed.

As LSUenger said so long as the tide is moving they are biting. If fishing cuts I prefer a falling tide but if fishing rocks or holes I don't think it matters.

Bumped this thread for you. Slipped away for a quick cast and blast this morning. Had a morning only Venice can produce. Back at the ramp for 8 with beautiful fish and fowl. I wouldn’t go as far south as south pass it’s not necessary. I think your or some in your non OB group have my number feel free to check in if needed but they were easy today.

Just seeing this. Ended up with 15 hammer trout. Pretty good day for not knowing the area well. Glad you found fish and birds. That’s an awesome trip.

And I did run all the way to the end of south pass but caught my fish a lot further north.
