My Grandfather played the fiddle for almost his entire life and with bands around the Ville Platte/Opelousas area (probably most notably with Belton Richard). I enjoy listening to his records and would probably want to try to learn how to play the fiddle.

What I’m wondering is how to even learn and for those who do play, what would you say is the “difficulty” level of learning to play? I understand with anything you have to practice to get good at it.

Idk if there is anyone who offers lessons in the Baton Rouge area or what resources are out there. I know there are some basic YouTube videos out there but would probably prefer in person.

Any advice or direction is much appreciated!

ETA my Grandfather passed away quite a few years back otherwise these would be great questions for him. However I know he couldn’t read music, he learned to play just be ear

Probably the case for 90% of fiddle players from your grandpa's generation.

You didn't say if you play other instruments, but I'll throw this out there. I'm an intermediate level guitar player and my daughter was taking violin lessons through a school program a few years ago. I started messing around with her violin and though the different tuning threw me off at first I settled in pretty quickly. Overall I'd say it's a more intuitive instrument to learn than guitar. Of course there are no frets and controlling the bow is tough, but I'd say it's an easy instrument to play poorly and a difficult one to master.

I bought a fiddle and used it to accompany someone for one performance and then quit but I still have it. It took about 2 weeks

If you’re familiar with stringed instruments it’s not that complicated but the bow is super unintuitive

The knob thing on the end tightens the bow that’s probably the most important thing that took me some time to figure out. Also the strings break really easy so be careful tuning. I can’t remember what song it was or what I used to learn it, I may have just went off a guitar tab

Played Saxaphone 3-8 grade. Never played it after. No real experience with stringed instruments. Fooled with guitar a little

I feel like I have an OK ear for music. Always loved it

Didn’t know how not having frets like a guitar would be like to play if that made it more difficult or not. Or just different

It should have marks but it doesn’t really need frets because the strings are soft

Two suggestions:

1. Check out the list of Cajun fiddle instructors in the Lafayette area on the SOLA Violins website Here.

2. Don’t pay any attention to the absolute idiocy that el Gaucho has posted here.

This may be the first serious post by el Gaucho I’ve ever read.
