the universal dark universe

watching the mummy which was supposed to be the relaunch of the universal dark universe of monster movies, the mummy, dracula, the wolf man, the invisible man, doctor jekell, frankinstein all franchises that universal owned it should have been as big as marvel and DC and yet it went over like a phart in an elevator.
honestly i thought the mummy was a solid movie.
they spent a shict load of money on this.

I didnt hate the movie but did not like how Cruise was a dummy in the movie. They should have played it more Indiana Jones than Abbot and Costello.

I’m guessing a plan to do something with it is still on the books (I hope so anyway). They’ve dedicated a whole world of the new theme park to Universal Monsters.

I thought Dracula Untold was the soft launch and the Mummy was was supposed to solidify the Universe with a more bankable star in Cruise.

NGl, I really liked Dracula Untold and Wolfman. I never saw the Mummy. I feel like it was poorly marketed and Tom Cruise was on his crazy arc around that time. But really don't remember much about it and I could be confusing the timing.
ETA: The version of "The Mummy" I always liked the most was Anne Rice's Ramses the Damned. I read that book WAY TOO YOUNG (I think 5th grade), but it holds a special place in my mind.

I think there's a lot of die hard fans that would love a universe, but there simply aren't enough that would make it a profitable venture

Robert Eggers is pretty much doing it now. He cracked the code that everyone had forgotten the cypher for. Women LOVE monsters, and their tastes have been forgotten in favor of more action and gore.
So you have a lot of repressed desire, moody music, and overt sexuality to bring them in. Then throw in some gore, body horror and a tragic hero trope or two to appeal to the men.
There is a formula.
