Recently dined at Charley G's in Lafayette. I loved smelling the wood-fire aroma in the restaurant upon walking in, and throughout my meal.
Started off with crab cake minis. Those were a disappointment. Very creamy inside, even though it was lightly fried, and I didn't care for the texture.
Cocktails were excellent.
Surf and turf was delicious. The way they cook their steaks might be one of my favorites of any restaurant. The inside of the steak reminded me of a sous-vide like throughout, but the char crust and wood-fire flavor have me already wanting to go back.
Corn mac choux and wood-fired asparagus were great sides.
Dessert was good.
Very expensive place -- I can't say they are overpriced, because they were packed.
I can't say I have been to many other steak houses in Lafayette, but I can certainly see why CGs has been in business for so long.

I think I went there like 20 or so years ago, but I honestly can't remember. I've always heard good things, though.

CG’s prices are comparable to other nice restaurants in the Lafayette area … Cafe Josephine, Mazen Grill, Cafe Sydney Mae, Ruffino’s, IMonelli, Papalona, etc … For a nice, quality meal, you’re gonna spend $12-$20 (app), $12-$15 (salad , soup, gumbo), $25-$35 entree with seafood, and $40-65+ for a steak.
I ate at Dons for lunch on Friday and the cup of bisque was $12, salad was $15, crabmeat au gratin was $27. For multiple reasons, food prices have doubled in the last 5 years. People continue to dine out and most parking lots of good restaurants are packed.

Yeah, I got the crab cakes there recently and they were not good.

Should have started with the gumbo. It is my favorite in Lafayette.

The wife and I need to try it again. I love wood-fired steaks and veggies, but the one time we went years ago, we didn't order steaks.
I remember getting the crab cakes, because she likes to try those wherever they're on the menu. Weren't horrible, but certainly wasn't something we yearn to order again.
I had heard about their duck and andoullie gumbo being excellent, so I got a bowl of that for my meal. Smelled awesome, but there seemed to be some vinergary taste to it. Was kind of off-putting for me. Still ate the whole bowl. Can't remember what entree she ordered, but we haven't been back. Was a great setting, but the food just didn't motivate us to want to return.
Might have to one day to try the steaks.
