Child of God by Cormac McCarthy

I know there have been multiple threads on McCarthy’s work so forgive me if this has been discussed before.
But I just finished Child of God. I find the writing every bit as beautiful as The Road and the subject matter every bit as if not more disturbing than Blood Meridian.
Perhaps that’s because I knew about Blood Meridian and wasn’t going into it completely blind.
I knew nothing about Child of God so that made it more shocking in many ways.
I’ve now read 6 of McCarthy’s books and he truly was one of America’s best writers.
The writing is beautifully effective. Can’t think of another author who can create such beautifully disturbing pictures with such an efficiency of words.
What’s the boards thoughts on this one

I have Suttree sitting on my bedside table just waiting to be picked up. I have so many good classics lined up, it’s hard to choose! I haven’t read Child of God but read Blood Meridian and the Border Trilogy this year. I think my next book by him will either be The Road or Suttree.

Kind of debating The Orchard Keeper or completing the border trilogy with Cities on the Plain next. But The Crossing has been, by far, my least favorite of his works. The only one I really struggled to get through

Read Cities on the Plain. It ties together the two first stories well. I will say it was my least favorite of the three, but I still think it’s worth a read.
So interesting to see that you didn’t like The Crossing. I loved that book.

I really liked the first part but once the storyline with the wolf ended, it just meandered on forever. I kept anticipating something happening and it never did. It just ended.
And a lot of the choices Billy made just didn’t seem like something any real person would do, even in the beginning with the wolf. A lot of the book I was just thinking WTF is this kid doing?

This book is not for everyone and I can see how some would find the content very disturbing/unsettling.
I can understand someone hating this book.
But I can’t even fathom calling it a slog.

Slog doesn't mean it is not a brilliant work. It just means that it was a chore to get through. It felt repetitive, and more like a history than a story. it lacks a narrative structure. Also, the lack of punctuation was just distracting.
