Not historical fiction, but an interesting biography. Any suggestions?

Full disclosure - I know some about the pirate, but obviously could learn more.
I have NOT read the book yet, but if I was picking up a book on Jean Lafitte, today, I would read Jean Lafitte Revealed - it is a 2021 biography done by a mother-daughter team and is just insanely well regarded at this point.
Link to paperback on Amazon

Try: The Pirates Laffite by William C Davis

I'm about halfway through Jean Laffite Revealed, and man this book is hard to get through. It gives some biographical info on Lafitte, but most of it is just speculation based on clues that some guy who lived in North Carolina was really Jean Lafitte in disguise.
Except for the first few chapters, the book isn't really a biography at all.
And I'm not really sure how to say this without sounding sexist, but its quite clear this book was written by woman. Too much personal opinion injected into the text, and too many eye-rolling lines like "If they thought that would slow down two hard-headed southern women, they had another thing coming." Or something like that.
I'm going to try to finish the book, because I hate giving up on a novel. But I'm quickly losing interest.

The Pirates Laffite by William C. Davis is good.
Patriotic Fire by Winston Groom is more specific to the Battle of New Orleans but also good.
