88-90 isn’t “barely college level”. If you can locate with that velocity you can beat anybody.

I guess you can quibble with semantics if you want, but in general I think “outside of the top 2 pitchers at an Ivy League school” and “barely college level” are roughly synonymous.

Rantz just said Alberts pitches are moving very well

I said “movement and/or speed.”

I just think it’s tough for our hitter to guess the correct pitch and still be off on the timing. We’ve got a bunch of dudes who are used to a certain rhythm, and it’s a problem for us when the pitcher is throwing a fastball and the batter is correctly thinking “fastball” but is still off because he needs to be thinking “fastball, but this guy sucks so I should probably be thinking change-up for timing purposes.”

LSU does ok with tier 1 pitching and crushes the next couple of tiers but struggles against guys with barely college-level arms that throw strikes. This has been the case for as long as I can remember, I’m guessing it’s because our batters are trained to expect more movement and/or velocity so every pitch from these rag arms is effectively off-speed.

He’s a 6, maybe 7, player that we were paying like a 9 or 10 who, mostly due to injury it seems, performed like a 3 or 4.

I don't know how some of you remember this in detail almost 25 years later I vaguely remember Mauck getting hurt one season, and it wasn't because I was really young or anything. I was out of college and into my career at that age.
I was a student at the time….what’s funny is I only vaguely remember the injury itself and had to look up the specifics, but I definitely remember arguing about the reasonableness of him being in the game.
The Pirates Laffite by William C. Davis is good.

Patriotic Fire by Winston Groom is more specific to the Battle of New Orleans but also good.

I don’t know, but I remember us k kneeling the ball against ole Miss in 2011 with like 10 mins left

It was 5 minutes left (which is still a lot). I can't tell who was QB on the FG drive before that one (that started at 12:52) because it was all runs, but I think Mett only got the last drive and Lee/Jefferson were still playing in the first part of the 4th quarter.
quote:

Am I crazy or did Brennan basically play most of the 4th qtr against Texas A&M and Oklahoma in 2019?

A&M counts I guess, because LSU called a timeout to take Burrow out and replace him with Brennan with like 12 minutes left.

For OU, Burrow was in for the drive at the start of the 4th quarter that resulted in a missed FG. OU then had a relatively long scoring drive and it was under 10 minutes left by the time LSU got the ball back and Brennan went in.
quote:

Still wild that Saban kept Mauck in that game against Florida when he got hurt.

It was over.

There were 11 minutes left when the drive started. I mean, I get that LSU had a comfortable lead, but pulling your starter with most of the 4th quarter still remaining in a road SEC game is not a no-brainer type decision.

I'm sure it has happened, but I can't find a single recent instance of LSU resting its starting QB resting with 10:45 or more remaining in an SEC game, regardless of score.
quote:

Irrelevant. LSU didn’t only score 20 because BK wasn’t concerned with the eye test. LSU scored 20 points off of 5 interceptions because LSU does not have a good offense.

The “just win” folks seem to be forgetting that we’ve played terrible teams so far. It’s easy to have a “doesn’t matter just win” attitude when we haven’t played an actual team yet.

It’s one thing to have that attitude if we have an ugly win over Ohio State. We’re getting ugly wins over LA Tech and Florida. It’s a problem and let’s remember Andrew Hatch also led us to 3-0. Who cares.

I don't really disagree with your overall point, but its just odd to me that people keep using "Ohio State" as the stand-in for "generic elite team as compared to the highly-flawed LSU" considering that Ohio State had a 13-9 lead in the 3rd quarter against Ohio last weekend.

FPI is predisposed to hate LSU

They had LSU at #3 behind Ohio State and Clemson after the national championship game in 2019

It's not anti-LSU, it's just heavily weighted to consistency over long periods of time and has trouble with LSU's almost-unique ability to shift from mediocre to elite on a moment's notice.
It's literally a comment about how difficult he thinks it will be to win at Clemson, with a slight joke about stadium nicknames thrown in...

25 we jsut do even keel. idk if I ever felt like we were obviously the best team in baseball, I also never felt like any team we played was better than us.

23 seemed like it had a handful of guys who would have batted leadoff/cleanup for pretty much every other team in the country.

25 did not seem that way at all, more like it had two handfuls of guys who would've been like the 2nd through 5th best player on most teams. I feel like you could ask 20 fans to rank the top 5 hitters in order and you might get 20 different lists.

Was Guidry the only injury this year to our pitching staff?

I have always seen/heard it used as pitching someone other than your ordinary starters. Like if we had started Cowan or Shores in game one of the SEC Tournament or the Regional.

I’d say “Pitching off” and “Pitching backwards” both mean throwing a lesser pitcher in Game 1 in order to maximize overall wins, but the success of “Pitching off” is determined based on whether or not you win that Game 1 whereas the success of “Pitching backwards” is determined by total number of wins in the series/tournament. This seems more like pitching backwards than pitching off (though really I think this is just a team that uses a rotation with its best pitcher throwing Game 2).

You “pitch off” to maximize your chances of going 2-0 and you “pitch backwards” to minimize your chances of going 0-2.

Seriously? Lol

When was the last time he pitched in a "Game 1"?

Or, to put it another way, over the last 50 days, has Josh Pearson hit in the leadoff spot for LSU more often or less often than Coastal's "Game 1 guy" has appeared in a Game 1?
quote:

They bypassed their game 1 guy in a regional format and again in a regional format.

What is the evidence that he is their "game 1 guy"?
quote:

No that didn’t happen. Just because people claim it isn’t true doesn’t make it not true lol.

They pitched off in game 1

How many weeks this year have they pitched off?
quote:

I don’t think we are getting a lot of attention, but I don’t think that’s a sign of disrespect. It’s more about there are so many different story lines at this year’s CWS. Murray State being a 4 seed, Coastal’s winning streak, DVH having his chance to win his first one after many chances, no teams returning from last year, 3 former PAC 12 teams… We are just one story of many stories. I’m fine with not having the spot light focused on us and I think it’s good for the game to have so many diverse stories.

This, plus this year's LSU team doesn't have the obvious superstars that 2023 team did (Skenes and Crews were both Golden Spikes finalists at this time two years ago).

Anderson was a semi-finalist and is very good, but (1) he's only a sophmore and this is his first year of really contributing so he hasn't had time to build a reputation and (2) it's not even clear that he's the best pitcher on the team.

Also, on the offensive side, if you're trying to list out the best hitters on the team the order is all over the place depending on what column you're sorting by.

quote:

Tennessee fell apart after that in an 8-1 game and walked 4 in the 7th. But at that point, the HBPs and BBs accounted for 4 runs...and 1 of those BB was intentional.

“It was elite baseball! They made through it 2/3 through the game with had only given up 4 runs via free bases!”

Do you not see how absurd you sound? An average of 0.6 walked players scoring per inning is very, very bad.
quote:

West Virginia walked (BB/HBP) 25 batters in 2 games.

Tennessee walked (BB/HBP) 10 in Game 2.

Would you say that was a good performance that resulted in a battle-tested opponent, or that their "pitching was terrible" and "Nobody in the world can honestly say that [team] played well"?
