Have a family member that is about to enter rehab for substance abuse and gambling. Anyone have any recs for a book or books I could get them to read while they are there?

We call it the big book, they should be given one while they are there, it's the manual.

City Of Joy, by Dominique Lapierre. Not about addiction, but about people overcoming the worst of situations in the worst place in the world. Very inspiring.

I found The Dragons of Eden to be a very interesting examination of the way our brains work.

Never been to rehab myself, but I’d get a copy of Man’s Search for Meaning if I did.

These all helped me when I was in a program. The main thing that he's going to have to learn is how to be bored. Accepting and embracing boredom is the key to staying sober.

Meditation is what worked for me. Learning how to be alone with myself and my thoughts helped me accept being bored and not looking for something to replace the boredom: like drink and drugs.

A book that helped me before I went to rehab was "Trocken" ("Dry" or "Sober") by Daniel Wagner, but it's in German and I doubt it's been translated into English. It's his autobiography as an alcoholic, and I saw myself so much and so often in it...

Thich Nhat Hanh rocks. He was truly a giant in the Buddhist world.

Like you, meditation works for me; it was the only thing that helped me overcome depression. And boredom is definitely a potential pitfall.

Drinking: A Love Story, Caroline Knapp

Blackout, Remembering Things I Drank to Forget-Sarah Hepola

Both great, VERY readable recovery memoirs. Something they'll enjoy reading and potentially helpful.
