A federal appeals court panel on Wednesday made way for President Trump’s National Guard deployment in Washington, D.C. to continue, a boon for his efforts to crack down on crime in the nation’s capital.
The three-judge panel on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit unanimously agreed to pause a lower court order blocking troops from being sent into the city as the Trump administration’s appeal proceeds.
The judges seemed swayed by the administration’s contention that D.C. stands apart from the states where Trump has sought to deploy military forces without the backing of local leaders.

“Because the District of Columbia is a federal district created by Congress, rather than a constitutionally sovereign entity like the fifty States, the Defendants appear on this early record likely to prevail on the merits of their argument that the President possesses a unique power within the District — the seat of the federal government — to mobilize the Guard,” wrote Judge Patricia Millett, an appointee of former President Obama.
