WARNING: Most portal players signed by LSU in 2026 are not going to be household names.

If you were expecting LSU to sign 5 of the Top 10 portal recruits, you are going to be disappointed. You might be disappointed if you were expecting one.
If you were expecting LSU to sign 20 or more of the Top 100 portal recruits, you are going to be disappointed. You might be disappointed if you were expecting ten.
That's not Kiffin's MO.
That's certainly not what he did at Ole Miss.
Last year, Ole Miss did not sign any Top 10 recruits. (LSU signed 2.)
Ole Miss signed only 4 of the Top 100 portal recruits. (LSU signed 7.)
That's right. Of the 30 players Kiffin signed in the portal last year, only 4 were Top 100 recruits. He signed only 5 portal recruits in the Top 100 in 2024.
Kiffin has more money to spend at LSU, but the needs are greater.
Most of the portal players signed by LSU this year are probably not going to be household names.

Kiffin doesn't star gaze, he recruits skillsets and attributes that fit his system.

I think that speaks to Kiffin’s ability to identify talent that other staffs/ recruiting outlets aren’t.
Typically, those recruiting services tie rankings to names and how popular a player is.
I trust Kiffin to identify the talent and everyone freaking out needs to relax. There’s another month of this.

It’s been stated multiple times it’s the high school recruiting that set LSU apart from Ole Miss. Theres no indication, literally zero, that he was ever going to adjust his extremely successful portal strategy.

I think people saw lane and all the money we had and thought we’d come out first day and sign the best players available. That’s unrealistic though

If I had to express the DIFFERENCE in approach to portal recruiting by Ole Miss and LSU in the past, I would say:
Kelly emphasized throwing money resources at the portal.
Kiffin emphasized throwing time and effort resources at the portal.

I’m close with a staffer in the recruiting dept at ole miss and to be fair, Lane wanted a lot of guys in the top 100….just didn’t have the money to land them. Haulcy was one they really wanted but couldn’t afford. He made the most with what he had and I agree he does seem to evaluate talent well, but the expectation should be a balance between grabbing elite guys and mixing them with potential imo

Yes to combine his plan in the portal with the HS recruiting you can do at LSU that you couldn't at Ole Miss. His portal plan was never gonna change. He knows who he wants and he so far he's gotten 5 guys that he wanted. Missed on Sorsby but Leavitt will be a good rebound.

Its dumb to think he doesn't see high rated recruits he didn't know about and then dig into them. Ratings have a lot to do with recruiting.

LSU
T Tech
Miami
Ole Miss
Oregon
4 of the top 5 made the playoffs. Yea portal rankings do not mean anything.....
Also all 10 teams making it were top 25. Excluding the scrubs like Tulane and JMU

Chambliss was a 3 star in the portal
Lacy was a 3 star in the portal
Diego Poinda was a 3 star last year
they have key players up and down the depth chart who were no names in the transfer portal.

This is more of an issue with portal rankings where you have a couple of weeks to figure out how to rank 5k players and less of an M.O. of Lane.

That's the top 5. Doesn't matter how it got there. The top teams did damage in the portal based on the rankings.
Ole Miss also added 3 4star WR which all contributed hugely this season. Rankings matter.

They had people in here saying “this portal class is going to feed families” and the night before the portal opened that it “felt like Christmas Eve”.
