So I'd rather not spend $100 on a Dong Phuong cake shipped up north.

I have looked through a lot of recipes, and this one seems pretty promising.

New Orleans Mom

Has anyone ever used this? Or have any recommendations for a very solid king cake recipe?

I’ve used like ten different recipes and they never turn out right. May the force be with you.

We have (ok my wife has) a from scratch cinnamon roll that we do every year for Christmas, considering repurposing for a king cake. I guess it would just be different shape and icing, not sure how it could be bad. It rises like crazy though, we might end up with something huge.

If you've ever had a Randazzo's King Cake, it is basically the same recipe as their great cinnamon rolls, so that sounds doable using your wife's recipe.

I've read this on here over the years and don't really get why.

Do you have much experience making bread, or enriched doughs like brioche or the aforementioned cinnamon rolls?

This recipe is a DP duplicate that I've made several times and it's great.

I haven't tried that recipe, but it looks reasonable. I've used a Southern Living recipe that I probably cut-out from the magazine 25-30 years ago with good results. It makes two decent size cakes or one very large cake.

This is a current LINK from SL that uses the same dough recipe. The filling was likely one of the options given in the original recipe

I do have some experience. I’ve made 10 king cakes and none of them have turned out right.

Difficult because of multiple factors.....but if you are far from the city, and need to try it out god speed.

We have tried the basic and it is tough! Literally
