North America added 94 rigs week on week, according to Baker Hughes’ latest North America rotary rig count, which was published on January 9.

Although the total U.S. rig count dropped by two week on week, the total Canada rig count increased by 96 during the same period, pushing the total North America rig count up to 741, comprising 544 rigs from the U.S. and 197 rigs from Canada, the count outlined.

Of the total U.S. rig count of 544, 525 rigs are categorized as land rigs, 16 are categorized as offshore rigs, and three are categorized as inland water rigs. The total U.S. rig count is made up of 409 oil rigs, 124 gas rigs, and 11 miscellaneous rigs, according to Baker Hughes’ count, which revealed that the U.S. total comprises 475 horizontal rigs, 57 directional rigs, and 12 vertical rigs.

A major state variances subcategory included in the rig count showed that, week on week, Louisiana dropped three rigs, and New Mexico, North Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming each dropped one rig. Utah added four rigs and Colorado added one rig week on week, the count highlighted.

Canada’s total rig count of 197 is made up of 128 oil rigs and 69 gas rigs, Baker Hughes pointed out. Week on week, the country’s oil rig count increased by 79, its gas rig count rose by 17, and its miscellaneous rig count remained unchanged, the count revealed.

The total North America rig count is down 59 rigs compared to year ago levels, according to Baker Hughes’ count, which showed that the U.S. has cut 40 rigs and Canada has cut 19 rigs, year on year. The U.S. has dropped 71 oil rigs and added 24 gas rigs and seven miscellaneous rigs, while Canada has dropped 16 oil rigs and three gas rigs, year on year, the count outlined.

In its previous count, which was published on December 30, Baker Hughes revealed that North America dropped 16 rigs week on week. The total U.S. rig count rose by one week on week and the total Canada rig count decreased by 17 during the same period, that count showed.

Venezuela reopening is an absolute killer for canada's economy. Venezuela has more crude oil than Canada does. When it comes to market, Canada loses a lot of leverage. They have to do something to make more oil and make themselves more attractive to US buyers, because otherwise we'll just go to Venezuela for our crude oil, and then Canada's economy goes kaput.

For people not completely familiar with Canada tge comment above it is not a joke..

In Canada there is a drilling season in much of the country….. areas are mash and you have to wait for the marsh to be frozen to get your equipment in.

Also many roads are managed for extensive areas.. very few roads and you have to use smart logistics to get into areas with others drilling.. often one road in . One out.. sometimes one long one through the area .. and road is one way.. your bting equipment in one end.. out the other..

And contracts are typically written between oil companies and rig contractors.. if the oil company does not get the rig out before thaw.. it will likely be stuck for the summer until next freeze… and yeah you are paying rent for it to sit in the mud for a few months. .

A few months ago we had to rush to plug a well in Montana before the cold combined with the wet. Now reclamation and remediation will have to wait till probably late Spring.

As someone stated. Winter drilling season. There are always a couple of weeks with large growth right after the first of the year.
