Would forming a "Team America" type team help the USMNT?

Correct me if I am wrong, but was there a time where the USSF built a "Team America" to compete in the NASL which basically was the Men's National team to play against clubs in the NASL and friendlies over the globe. Should the Federation think of doing this again, maybe a year or so out and start playing clubs all over to build cohesion and potentially having the best "team" possible to send to the World Cup?

Russia tried this in the lead up to the 2018 World Cup.
No, it doesn't work.

You want them to leave their clubs and play friendlies together?

No, because these guys make their money in their short careers at club level.

Russia was a penalty shootout away from making the Semifinals
Not saying it was directly due to this but something worked
