Why is there a clock?

Because they still use quarters. If the game is tied at the end of the 1st OT, they flip the field just like they do in regulation.

With the current rules, the clock is pretty much pointless.
They should just play an additional quarter unless one of these two things happen:
A) team that got the ball first in OT has the lead and possession. Game ends.
B) team that got the ball second has the lead. Game ends.

Still would like to see a game go to double OT.

If they go to 2nd OT, is it still first to score or do they both get a chance again?

They should put 12:00 on the clock and play another quarter of football with regular rules. No guaranteed amount of possessions or any other crap.

It's happened a few times before. Most recently was the 2012/13 divisional round game between the Ravens and Broncos (the one where Flacco had that insane downfield touchdown pass to tie the game at the end of regulation).

Make it a full 15 and you got a deal.

It depends on who has the ball and where on the field + who Goodell wants to see advance.
They would make it up as they go.

This is what I would prefer, but lowering to 10 or 12 minutes would help appease the crowd that faux outrages about player safety.

Would have to be next score wins at that point, yeah.
Maybe some sort of stipulation that you must reach your opponents' 30-yard line to attempt a field goal? There is just no great way to determine a winner once you get that deep into overtime in a sport that physically demands so much. But then again, you do see 3 and 4 overtime hockey games in the postseason.

The Second Overtime Period: If the clock runs out in the first 15-minute OT and the score is still tied, they just take a two-minute break and start the second OT. There is no new coin toss. They just switch ends of the field and keep playing from wherever the ball was.

Panthers/Rams divisional round in 2003 was an all time classic.
