What are the best/ safest neighborhoods for vacation rentals?

We stay in Herndon VA. Don't ever do this because even though it was a very nice neighborhood it was too far away. Google maps does it no justice for how long it took us to get into DC.

We just got back from DC last week. We looked at VRBO and air bnb. We ended up staying in a hotel downtown and enjoyed it. It was close enough to some attractions that were were able to walk. The price was reasonable and uber was always close/reasonable for rides to the main attractions.

Anything in NW DC (Georgetown, Dupont, Adams Morgan, Mt Pleasent, Cleveland Park) is safe and walkable with lots of good restaurants in the area.
Arlington, especially along the orange line (Courthouse, Clarendon, Ballston) and Alexandria (Del Ray or Old Town) are good option too. Del Ray is a bit more of a walk to a metro station
