The poor thing was hopeless outclassed by 1942, but with upgrades fought on to the end of the war. What’s really crazy, is it’s still in service today. Here are some from the Paraguaian Army…

It worked pretty well in N Africa against the Germans and Italians. It was reliable (something German and Brit tanks were not, breaking down in the deep desert is bad, y'know) and fast. It was a fast armored scout, and as long as it stuck to that duty, it was good at it.
One of the most haunting things you will see is the knocked out Stuart at the Museum of the War in the Pacific. A 3" shell went right through the bow gunner's head. You would think no one survived, but the rest of the crew managed to bail out and there is a video of the tank commander talking about it inside.

Love that tank! I had stopped for gas in southern Indiana on the way back home from running a project near Chicago. There was an M3 loaded up on the back of a flat-bed semi being delivered to its new owner somewhere near Louisville. It was neat to actually see one "in the wild" so to say.

Yes, it was their main tank. A one of the few tanks of WWII that the M3 Stuart could say it out-classed.
Own thing about the Japanese that few seem to understand is that their army was very much structured to refight a WWI style infantry/artillery war. Thy saw armor as something to support the infantry, nothing more. So, they never really put much emphasis on tank development.

Thinking the same thing. Especially being smaller it would have gotten around easier during island warfare (tighter conditions and smaller roads).

they were ok the pacific, the upgraded models used as scouts in europe if i recall correctly

Yeah. The upgraded version of the Stuart was used extensively by the US Army in Europe right up to the end of the war. I built this one about 6 years ago.
Notice both the hull and turret have been redesigned. And this particular one was equipped with the field modification commonly known as “hedgerow cutter” commonly used in the fighting in Normandy’s bocage.
In the final months of the war, some units were receiving the new, an vastly superior, M24 Chafee light tank…
I’ve never built a Chafee, but Tamiya is releasing a 1:35 kit this year, so I’ll rectify that situation very soon.
