Heading up there in a week. Are there any bait shops that sell shiners nearby. This will be my first trip up there.

Only two that I know of, one is a feed store south of the interstate and the other is a older man (don't even know if he's still alive) to the west as you are heading north from the interstate. He sold shiners and had a bait shop in his garage, can't tell you where to turn though.

The shop south of the interstate is closed, I don’t think the old man is still alive either. They sell them at the marina when they have them in stock!

Does no bait shops portend that the fishing isn’t good in that area?

It’s nothing like it used to be, but is still good for the crappie and catfish.
Bass fishing is abysmal

Our group goes every year. We have not used shinners. Launch at the marina and go left through the cut and fish those trees right when you go through cut. You can miss it there will be alike of boats in that small hole. We always catch them in there. Also go south from marina and fish towards West Bank ( on your right) where the trees are sticking out of water. Fish out from the trees. Use a live scope if you have one. Throw at the singles. If the wind doesn’t s blowing it will be tough in that spot.

Go catch em

Not exactly close, but the Exxon truck stop in Tallulah off Hwy65 south of I-20 used to have shiners and crickets. About 25 minutes from Poverty Point though. But depending on where you are coming from, might work.

1st or 2nd week in march. If it’s warm for a week prior you can catch em on the bank.
