I'm not sure if this should be on F & B board or here, but I figured I'd try here first.

We are going on a Greek island cruise in september and are staying two nights pre-cruise at the Athens Gate Hotel. I'd like to make dinner reservations ahead of time and have come up with this list of restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. I'm not looking for Michelin star, frou frou food but do like great service, food and ambiance.

Has anyone here been to any of these, and would you recommend them? We would like at least one of our meals to be rooftop with an Acropolis view, and that would likely be the Athens Gate Rooftop restaurant in our own hotel, so mainly looking for the second night.

Sense Rooftop
Point A
Arcadia
Botany Roof Garden
Liondi
Elaea
God's Restaurant
Yard Restaurant
Taverna PANOS

thanks TD!

My wife and I went to Greece a few years ago. We ate at the Athens Gate Rooftop. Great views but it will be pretty warm outside in September. We went in early June and I remember us moving inside because it was too hot on the terrace. The food and ambiance were great.
Another great meal we had was at Kozmikon in Athens. We saw it one day on a walk and it looked cool so we booked a reservation that night. It’s on a lovely corner and we sat outside under the trees and had a wonderful meal.
Try to visit the Plaka neighborhood in Athens. We ate at the Taberna Psaras and it was great as well. The area it is in has narrow streets and stairs and people sit on the stairs to eat. Great way to people watch and soak in the atmosphere.
Greece/Athens is awesome. Enjoy!

Two recommendations. One a Michelin star and another a great local restaurant. Varoulko Seaside or Strofi, both are an easy cab ride from your hotel and I would highly recommend either.

Strofi.

Ten minute walk.

Or

Kuzina

Twenty minute walk.

Both have rooftops and outstanding food.

Secure a reservation.

If I might hijack the thread some!

We will be there Friday morning. Leave on a cruise Sunday.

What would you recommend doing to maximize our time there?

I was there in 1979 for a week actually but have forgotten most and it's been a long time.

We ate at God’s last September, after our Acropolis museum visit. it had a more tavern style vibe. Service was excellent food decent.

Not sure if you want to do the Parthenon, but if you want to fit it in I would recommend doing it first thing in the morning or later in the evening for lower crowds. This time of year shouldn't be too crowded but you never know.

Have lunch at a rooftop overlooking Monistraki Square. It is always bustling and great people watching. I just looked up the restaurant we ate at, and it looks like it has closed and something else moved in. I would imagine that most restaurants in that area are similar.

My earlier post recomended the old Tavern of Psarras. Not only was it great food, but that area of Plaka is awesome, especially in the evenings. Around the corner from there is Brettos Bar. It is a small joint but really cool bar. We had a good breakfast at Tazzos, it has the bougainvillea draping down over the patio.

For just a day or so in town, I would just walk around the neighborhoods at the foot of the Acropolis. Plaka is the most famous as well as Anafiotika. Grab a coffee at a patio table and people watch. Just outside of town is Lycabettus Hill. You can take a cable car to the top and have great views of the city. You actually look down on the Acropolis area.

If you want to visit ruins, there is obviously the Parthenon. The new museum at the base of the hill is amazing. The Temple of Hephaestus is very cool, it is one of the most well preserved ruins in the ancient world. The Roman Agora and Gate of Athena is also near there, all close to Monistiraki Square

Best way to get from airport to hotel in Athens? Doing the Empires of the Mediterranean. Athesense Suites. Plaka area.

Thanks!

We used AirBnB for our lodging, and the host arranged a car to pick us up. This was in 2023 but I still have the driver's number in my phone. We used him a few more times during our stay.

Might be worth a shot to see if he's still active. He was pretty responsive to texts if I remember correctly

Not sure if y'all are cocktail people, but if you are, do yourself a favor and go to The Clumsies.
