Road Trip

I am gently* considering road tripping to Montana for our summer vacation. We have been to Wyoming/Montana a bunch, but always fly. Family of 5 with 3 kids, but all very well traveled. Is this just a terrible idea?
It is the same price to rent a large SUV here and return there, as it is to rent one there for the duration. We would fly home, but gas there would be cheaper than the 5 flights there.
Looking for recommendation for 3 stops along the way that involve really nice resorts or unique stops that would make this type of trip worth while. Off of the top of my head, I was thinking Dallas, Santa Fe and Steamboat Springs, but I’m open to all suggestions or routes.

Where is your starting point? Where are you going in Montana?

Did this trip last summer but pulled my camper so can’t help with resorts. Left from BR
We did new braunfels, Amarillo, Colorado Springs, and Bozeman before our final stop in Bigfork.
Texas to Colorado is a boring drive
New braunfels has tons of stuff for the kids to do
Amarillo was just a sleep stop
Colorado Springs was great they have the broadmoor there that looked really nice
