I am bringing my g/f to New Orleans for the a couple of days next week. I have searched for the "best" places to eat but I can't afford the places like Stella, K-Paul's, etc. Can anyone provide some places that are reasonably affordable but still pretty good? I dont know the area to well, but we will be staying near Harrahs.

Thanks!

I have been told Mothers for sure.

Are you only going to play around the CBD and Quarter? If you venture uptown there are a number of places within walking distance of the streetcar route.

Indeed...if you wanted to do one nicer dinner...Le Crepe Nanou or Dick and Jenny's are affordable. Hell, even Commander's for lunch.

Not food / drink board related, but which of the following would you recommend for Jazz: Donna's, Fritzels, Preservation Hall or Dragons Den?

i reccomend a walk to Frenchman street and check out Spotted Cat, Blue Nile, etc. it's right across Esplanade from the quarter. Much better music, fewer tourists, and less crowded and annoying.

Dont mind the walking, but how far would that be from harrah's and would it be a safe walk late at night?

PLEASE DO NOT GO TO MOTHER'S.

It's actually pretty expensive for a po-boy place, and you ain't missin' much anyway.

Long lines, lots of shouting - including the staff shouting at you personally.

Johnny's would be cheeper and probably a little bit better for po-boys.

Mr. B's is also a good option for a very nice dinner that won't break the bank.

-100 Mother's Don't go. Not worth the hype.

I'd really suggest K-Paul's for lunch! They now serve lunch on Friday's and it's very reasonable. Would give you a chance to eat at a nicer place without the hefty bill.

Here's the menu...

Someone apparently lied to you. Also, I don't recommend Mr. B's; I personally think it's overrated.

Also EAT on the corner of Dauphine and Dumaine is really great and it's very reasonable because it's BYOB with no cork fee. I'd recommend it for breakfast or brunch. Bring your own champagne and/or vodka and have mimosas or bloody marys on the cheap.

For brunch I had a shrimp omelet that was yummy.

If you like Jazz and you're going to be around this weekend...take the ferry across to Algier's Point and enjoy the RiverFest. It's a jazz festival with wonderful jazz music and food booths.

And the ferry is walking distance to Harrah's.

It's worth a trip just to see Algier's Point. It's a really quaint community that is the second oldest area in the state (after the French Quarter)

You should go to Stanley in the quarter for an affordable brunch/lunch but delicious food. It's right in Jackson Square, one of the nicest little spots to eat. Then you can walk around the quarter. Stanley is owned and operated by Scott Boswell, the same chef who runs Stella. You can't go wrong with this one. The Reuben is especially good, as is the oyster poboy. Everything there is pretty top notch.

Yo Mama's in the quarter also has pretty tasty burgers. Better than long overhyped Port of Call (but if you want, you could also go to Port of Call, it's not bad, it's just not as good as they say).

Mother's is a solid choice for lunch. Just stick to some of the more popular items as some of the lesser items can be very mediocre. Just get the poboy with the ham and beef or whatever with the debris on it. Or a fried seafood poboy.

Cochon is also a pretty nice place, maybe just a tad above your dinner budget, but perhaps worth it. The baked oysters are great. Also close to the quarter.

Even though it's a crime to say I haven't eaten there, I'd have to second Central grocery just out of all I've heard. I'm just not that big a muffalatta fan.

I'd have more suggestions but i have to go. You really should pencil in Stanley, it's a no brainer for your budget and your location.

But if you want my honest opinion, you should go all out and hit Stella, and then eat Wendy's $.99 menu the rest of the time. That's just me. Stella is amazing.
