He was amazing to watch. Those who missed it...well, they missed it. The likes of Mike in his prime may never be seen again

He was great, but he was dominating tomato cans. He beat people because they were scared of him and they lost before the fight even started. There are plenty of dudes in history who wouldn't have been scared and would have worked him over.

without a doubt.....no.

nobody has ever terrified the entire sport like he did before he fell in with the wrong handlers.

we were talking about that brief window when he was at his peak, not his overall body of work. You are faulting him b/c he scared everyone? there is a reason people were terrified....he was on a total different level and was just brutal.

Ali would be even more retarded than he is if he had to fight Tyson in that prime.

Tyson's brief peak was higher than anyone, ever. His overall career was not.

No, I am faulting him for dominating what might be the worst heavyweight "era" in boxing history.

Yes, because they were garbage. He did not beat one heavyweight worth a shite. A lot of that is not his fault, but the question was "can anyone in the history of boxing" have beaten him. I think there are probably 10 dudes in history who would have worked him over pretty good.

You saw what happened when 1 guy stood up to him for the 1st time--he got knocked the frick out. Granted, a lot of shite had happened to him and he was not at his peak, but he was still just as terrifying. He was still "the baddest man on the planet." It's just that Buster Douglas wasn't terrified. And Mike wasn't all that bad.

In his prime? No way he gets "worked" by any of the greats and all would have been a little afraid to step in the ring with that guy. I agree his competition wasn't great early but he gave Holmes his first knockout in 75 fights and Dominated absolutely everyone who was placed before him like noone has ever done.

Buster Douglas wasn't afraid of Mike Tyson and you think Muhammad Ali would have been? You think Joe Frazier would have been? George Forman? Get fricking real.

Not saying they would have been shiting their pants but they would have been a little afraid of the guy durring the time period I indicated. Buster caught Mike when Mikes life started falling apart and he started his new bat shite crazy persona. I was only talking about that window when he was extremly dominant over everyone he faced.

that's kind of the point of this thread....his peak.

It's well known in the boxing community that once Cus D'Amoto died and he left Rooney in late 1988 that it was a very consistent and strong downward spiral in terms of skills, training, conditioning, prep, focus, desire, etc. He was not the same fighter at all...and there were talks of this swirling around in boxing circles

His knockouts of Bruno and Truth before the Douglas fight were HUGE redflags that he had strayed from the course and the best was done and far behind him. All he did was go for the knockout...the brutal, but smart, style he used to use was gone.

Not sure what arguing about the Douglas fight has to do with Tyson in his primes...86-88 as mentioned in the first post.

Tyson also gave Spinks, the man who beat Holmes in 85 his first loss with a 1st round KO. not that Spinks was a HOFer but he did take out Holmes when Holmes was still kicking arse, just sayin

I just really don't think they would have been. Those dudes thought they were the baddest motherfrickers around. They weren't going to be scared by some other dude.

But he was only that dominant because he was fighting nobodys. Fear was his main weapon. Take that away from him and he's just a 5'10" dude trying to trade punches with 6'2"+ dudes for 10 rounds.

Look, he's without out a doubt the most exciting boxer in history. He's by far my favorite ever also--I don't think I could ever possibly love another boxer the way I did Mike Tyson. shite, if he fought this weekend, I'd buy the Pay-Per-View. But in my older, wiser age, I've gained a little perspective. And that perspective tells me he wasn't as historically good as my 10-year-old self remembers him being.
