2009 outlook for ole miss

does anyone else here think that ole miss will not be all they are getting cracked up to be next season? people have been picking them to win the SEC left and right, now i understand that they have a favorable schedule, but come on, i just do not see them being that good next year for a couple of reasons
#1 everytime houston nutt has had high expectations his respective teams have not lived up to the hype.
#2 i think people give them to much credit for their win over texas tech in the bowl game, i do not think TT was all that great (remember what OU did to them?)
#3 they have never won a SEC championship game and i just dont see it starting now.

No, people have been picking UF to win the SEC left and right...
I think OM may win the west, but will run into a buzzsaw if they have to face UF..

If Ole Miss can't replace Oher at LT, they won't win the division. It's not like they're USC that has some bigtime guy ready to play left tackle in this league. IMO Michael Oher and Andre Smith are by far the two biggest losses any team in the West has. Bama recruited a Juco guy so they at least have a chance to have a decent guy there. Ole Miss, huge question mark.

ColtsTigers, you are right. Replacing Oher is by far the biggest obsticle that the Rebels have going into the season.
However, you do not have to be USC to have a solid player to plug into the system. We have that. The young mans name is Bradly Sowell, who will be backed up by 5* recruit Bobbie Massie. Neither gentlemen will equal Michael Oher, combined even, but we don't need them to. And as for Sowell, so far, so good. he is holding his own quite well against one of the best front seven in the SEC. And for Ole Miss, the cool thing about that is, the front seven that I speak of happen to be on the same team as he.

Sowell is a Sophomore former 3* who got demoted for a week in spring practice (for a guard, mind you). What makes you think he is ready to go? I'm not saying he is or isn't, but his credentials aren't exactly topnotch.
And Massie is more of a right tackle type. He'll be better than Jerry once he takes over there in a year, but I don't see him as a great left tackle option this year.

I think that Ole Miss may finally break through and win the SEC West this year.
Then again, after their opening game super regional win against Virginia, I thought that they'd finally figure out a way to stop choking away a postseason baseball series. Shows what I know.

ColtsTigers, I can see your point about Sowell. He was demoted in order to "get his mind right". I am saying that he is ready to go because probably not much unlike yourself in terms of LSU knowledge, I know alot of people close to the Ole Miss athletic dept.,which is where I get my insider knowledge. Now you might site a certain bias here.However, two of the guys I know call a spade a spade, and if it kills them, they tend to call it as they see it. And they say there is not a whole lot to worry about concerning Sowell.
As for Massie, no, he is not at all a "right tackle" type. He was recruited to play the position he played at Hargrave Military, which was LT.

He may have been recruited for LT, but that's likely a recruiting ploy to get him to sign, and bc you didn't have any better options. He's a great RT prospect, but he doesn't have the athleticism you look for on the left side. Run blocking is his forte.

And yes, as silly as it sounds, I am getting my info from the shorts and t-shirt phase of preseason training. Everything I have heard says that he has taken what was once a sort of a dough-boy physique, and turned it into the picture of an SEC tackle sort of body.In addition to that, he has been working on quickness and footwork technique. Now, being in Atlanta, I have not seen this with my own two eyes, but I was told that he has either met or surpassed all the goals that the coaching staff has put before him and that (for once) he is seemingly excited to "get this party started".

I realize he's Sowell's backup. That doesn't mean it is his best position. He's Sowell's backup bc you have nobody else.
Well, that's good that Sowell is improving, he will need it. Still, he's young, wasn't highly recruited, and he'll have to protect your meal ticket's back side against the best pass rushers in the league. Again, it's not the same as a USC or that type of program that has an ideal guy ready to step in.

Again, an un-truth. We have some depth, mind you, not alot, so Massie being at LT is not because "that is all we had". In addition, the good news is that the depth that we do have are pretty darn interchangable. Brandon Green will be doing much of that. Not to mention Washington, Clair, and Tatum.
Also, don't sleep on what Daverin Geralds will do to help the young Mr Sowell in pass protection.
Now, I will never downplay what the loss of Michael Oher means to this team, but one player does not a team make, especially when it is a player that is not one of a "skilled position".

The guys you mention are short, stubby guys that can't play left tackle. Hence, Massie working there.
A left tackle is one of the top 5 most important positions on a team, in particular when your QB is one of your best players and is a pocket passer.

As for short and stubby players, I don't know that I will buy that either. Clair is 6'5"/305, Washington is 6'4"/337-that does not sanction them as short and stubby in my book.
Did you see Jevan Snead play at all last season? I would hardly qualify him as a pocket passer. The guy is elusive enough. Sure, noone is going to mistake him for Michael Vick, but acting as though he has no mobility is a bit of a stretch.
Overall, he only gained 57 yrds last season, but as we all know sacks go against that total. In reality, when rushing, Snead gained 187 yrds and 3 TD's, and another ten or so yard scamper for a TD that was called back against FLA.
Again, not Michael Vick, but I am sure that you see my point...
