that it is possible to rein in healthcare costs by somehow reducing costs across the board ? are, or things just too far gone to ever make that a reality.

It is possible. It is NOT possible, however, for politicians, insurance companies or pharmaceutical companies to do it.

Between our aging and overweight population and the ever increasing number of medical procedures they come up with to save it, UHC has always been a pie in the sky proposition.

IMO, the key has to be the end user of the service must have a stake in controlling the costs of the service. In other words, users of health care must be incented to save money on the services provided. That was the original intent of large co-pays years ago. But so many health care plans, specifically at first large union plans and then followed by large employers, became first dollar plans.
The insurance paid the first dollar, the last dollar and all the dollars in between.
Why should Joe or Josephine Sixpack go through the medical bill if he/she doesn't pay for any of it? Why does he/she care how many tests are ordered, except maybe to save some time or inconvenience?
But if they had to pay a share of the costs, they would be more likely to ask questions or even shop around. I know I fired my longtime dentist just because I thought he had raised his fees too much. After checking around, I was right, and I switched to another dentist.
But the union plans would have to be cut back, and BHO ain't gonna' allow that to happen!

It is 100% IMPOSSIBLE to reign in health care costs.
The whole myth of controlling costs is a lie.
Why?
Humans always crave more and better care. In a world tilted towards more and worse health issues.
IE - the realities and the goals are polar opposites of each other.
Need an example?
Bugs become superbugs. There. End of story.
We "knock down" the flu virus and up pops more and more powerful flu viruses.
IE, a whole new train of costs associated with identifying and eradicating a new bug.
That requires new knowledge, new technologies, new development (tests, trials, etc) and new production.
All new costs.
So the moral of the story is, ANYONE who tells you they can "reign in health care" costs is a flat out liar or, worse, intentionally uninformed.

Of course everything can be controlled to an extent. I have often wondered how some healthcare items can cost so much. How can an over the counter prescription bottle of pills cost $100 or more? I mean what can they put in it to substantiate that type of price tag.
Birth control.... how can some insurance companies not pay in full for this but yet have very little pregnancy costs? How can a Nuva Ring cost $75 at Walgreens for 1 prescription and some health plans have a $100 pregnancy deductible? Seems like controlling birth would keep expenses down overall.
I don't think there needs to be govt controlled healthcare, but I do think govt needs to put caps on costs of healthcare items. When you check into a hospital, it isn't like a hotel room with a rate card on the back door. You have no clue how much it costs until you get the bill months down the road.
I know there is no price on life, but how can healthcare cost so much????

It costs $100 because a drug company spends over $200 million and 10 years to bring it to market.
