Not a major loss...swimming has done NOTHING of late, and everyone I have ever heard talking about him says he was a major prick.

With Crawfish Aquatics in town and the legendary Ripples, maybe they could be a good hire for LSU

it's hard for me to remember that LSU has volleyball and swimming/diving programs

We're actually pretty good at VB. I think top-15 last year.
Swimming is our worst sport. We haven't been competitive in over a decade.

If Alleva did fire him then I take it as a positive sign that mediocrity won't be tolerated at any level in LSU Athletics. If you're going to fire a coach in a sport that most people don't give two figs about, then you're probably going to do it across all levels where we're not competing well. Right now there are a number of sports where that could happen. Also, LSU doesn't compete in nearly as many sports as some of the major programs like Ohio State, Michigan and the big programs out west. If LSU ever really wants to compete with the Ohio States, USC's, Michigans as all around athletic programs go, we'd have to add a number of programs to both the women and the men's side as well. Probably won't happen but it would raise the profile of the university and could help the university all around.

First one I have seen. My daughter is a high school swimmer so I kinda follow the LSU swim team. Actually the SEC has been one of the top 2 or 3 conferences in swimming year in and year out. Auburn and Georgia usually have outstanding teams with some Olympic calibre athletes.

Anyone in the know out there about college swimming/diving? Was wondering who might be the best hire we could make? I know that Auburn and Florida typically have strong swimming/diving programs.

With Miles' daughter getting closer to college maybe he got this coach fired to hire someone more favorable for his kid. Someone with a real want and desire to compete.

As long as at least 8 teams in all of Division I finish with lower offensive stats than your team you are good with Joe.

I just saw that Florida, Auburn and Georgia all finished in the top 10 in both the women and men's NCAA finals held last week. Perhaps that helped prompt the change.

are they even the best aau team in the state?? I thought that Boltz in New Orleans was the top team in the state. I know 90% of the New Orleans private school teams swim for Boltz as well

i'm a former swimmer for LSU... not really in the know anymore. But it all went downhill about 10 years ago after our coach was ran out. They have some really great quality at the top but not enough depth. They fail to keep the top talent from Louisiana in-state which is the programs #1 problem... the state always has great talent but the coaches think they don't have to recruit in-state swimmers hard and that they will just come.
Another problem is the facilty... still no central heat or air in the building. The building itself is absolute shite... the pool is very fast. All the top programs have new pools... our pool is not a very good selling point for recruits.
Don't really know who they can hire from here... the coach was an LSU alum who came from great programs. You have to keep people in state just like any other sport.

Facilities are a huge issue. I've been to meets at Georgia, AU and Tennessee. All three facilities are state of the art. NCAAs have been held at AU. Not sure about UGA or UT, but their natatoriums are equal. I have met some former LSU swimmers who said the coach didn't give former LSU swimmers the time of day. I think it was time for a change, but if LSU is serious about competing in the SEC in swimming, a new or seriously renovated facility is a must.

I think the Bolts team folded about 10 years ago after Coach Bower left. As far as I know, the pay was not that good. A lot of SEC coaches leave their jobs for higher profile USS teams. Former Auburn coach David Marsh left AU after nine national titles to coach the Mecklinburg Aquatic Club in NC. The push in swimming is leaving college and moving towards USS and more Jr and Sr. National level meets and not college. HS and College coaches are being accused of specializing athletes too much and too soon (moreso HS of course).

I agree with the first part, but LA Swimming has been pathetic for the last few years. All the truly elite swimmers go to AU. I belive Robert Looney was the last truly elite swimmer from LA in years and he went to UT I think. In the last four SEC Zones championship, LA is been in the last four states with MS, WV and SC every year.
