BP's goal is to stop oil from flowing into the ocean from three leaks in the damaged well, while drilling a "relief well" from a half-mile away to the original well, inject a heavy solution into and ultimately cap it with concrete. Although BP has already bored 8,700 feet -- 900 feet more than the day before -- the 16,000-foot relief well, the ultimate solution, is expected to take three months.

i'm don't know much about drilling other than what i've learned since this incident started. this seems like monumental progress toward getting this done. i assume the drilling is about to become much more difficult or is BP way ahead of schedule on this project?

The deeper you go the harder and slower it gets.

Work also has begun on the relief well, Suttles said Monday.
"That started about a week ago," Suttles said. "That work continues. The well is at about 9,000 feet. About 5,000 feet of that is the water depth. Then the rest is drilling below the sea floor. We're slightly ahead of plan here. These are complex tasks, but we're making very good progress."
