Why no Navy involvement?

Surely the Navy has any number of submarine technologies to handle just such an event. If they don't they should. since a massive oil spill surely does threaten the nation. Not a lawyer, but can't see how there's any legal furballs.

I am sure the underwater equipment that is being used right now is better than anything the Navy has.

During the first Iraq war, when the oil fields were set on fire, the military hired private contractors with expertise in well control, a lot of the same people are working on this problem. Oceaneering Inc has far more technology and experrience using ROV/robotics at this depth than the Navy.

Usually the Coast Guard handles all domestic waterway issues.
And as a former submariner I can tell you that submarines aren't built with super secret oil capturing technology... subs are built to fight enemy combatants or to gather surveillance.

As others have pointed out, the Navy has very limited (if any) experience dealing with wellheads. Sure, there's plenty of submersible technology but BP already has that covered.
There's also Posse Comitatus, which prevents the federal military from doing *anything* to take care of local affairs without state civilian permission. That is why it's a big deal for a governor to declare a state of emergency - it isn't just for the papers, it's to give permission to the feds to get involved. Posse Comitatus also is a big reason why the Coast Guard is not under the Department of Defense, that lets the CG avoid Posse Comitatus legal problems.

There is no Navy involvement, because "O" want to keep the pot stirred, since he is against BIG OIL
