Oilfield Moratorium

It's much more than just a drilling moratorium.
From what I'm hearing, in addition to the stoppage of all deepwater drilling, basically no new permits are being issued. Rigs being stacked and leaving the Gulf. This will not be good if it continues.

"To obtain approval to conduct an activity in support of existing deepwater production, you must submit your request..." the notice reads. Applications must include a detailed, site-specific risk analysis with discussion about how to handle a loss of well control.

It's what "O" wants. Now he can sell wind, sun and rubberbands to use in your vehicles

A lot of my friends that work on the service side are getting nervous, deepwater has been a lot of people's bread and butter for a few years now. Most of them are higher up and think they'll be doing a lot of brazil work for the next 6 months. Not good for old Houma.

I think two demands are reasonable:
1. Demonstrate that you can operate in a safe and responsible manner.
2. Demonstrate that you have an effective plan for dealing with a spill like this.
I think 1 is doable for most companies, but they need to be audited to see if words match deeds.
2 is problematic for the entire industry. Arrogance and complacency has gotten to the point where they only spew bullshite about this stuff. They need to study what's going on and put together a believable plan and demonstrate they have to capabilities to implement it.

There should be a consortium compised of all of the offshore operators and service providers that ARE experts to consult if something like this happens agin. The Federal gov can't even deliver the mail how are they going to fix this?

This moratorium is going to cost alot of jobs. They are calling deepwater anything over 500ft, Most of your DPW rigs are already making plans to be moved over sees. Talked to my buddy yesterday he said Diamond is stacking a bunch of rigs as well.

They will develop very prescriptive regulations with severe consequences, since industry has clearly demonstrated an inability to handle DW drilling without such.

Man get your head out of your arse, this is the first event like this to happen in over 40 years. There is so much fricking emphasis on safety and procedure in the oilfield "especially with the majors" it is not even funny. There has been thousands upon thousands of wells drilled with no inccidents, this was truely a freak accident.

I get mail every day except Sunday. Everything I mail gets where it's supposed to.

Please state your qualifications for making an assinine statement like this.

Why hasn't coal mining been shut down completely? Afterall there was a tragedy where people lost their lives. Not to make light of either situation, but this moratorium is completely ridiculous.

Oil companies have had the benefit of the doubt, and now they need to prove that they are safe. There is on evidence that this was a freak accident. This is most likely the result of choices made that put practical expediency ahead of safety and responsibility.

This will hurt the deep-water independents that cant go over seas. The big boys will leave, sign big contracts overseas and never come back. This goes for all deep-water support vessels as well. Say goodbye to the Tidewater, Seacor, Hornbeck, Cheoust, etc....deep-water vessels. Jobs will be gone as well, as of the past 18 or so months, deep-water was keeping this industry alive as the shelf and inland business has been slow. this wont be the case unless they do something to keep these rigs in the GOM. I feel that there will be so much pressure on the administration to lift this ban that O will have no choice. If these rigs leave, it could possibly effect La, Ms and Al longer and harder than the oil hitting our coastlines.

I see that the well is still leaking and I see that the spill containment is not going well. Where have you been?

I think they are doing what they can to contain the oil. What more would you like for them to do?

Pretty much what I expected, someone who has no clue making statements regarding something they know nothing about. Part of the reason our country is headed into the crapper is because of citizens like this guy who think he knows everything about an industry because he saw a 10 minute hatchet job on the nightly news about it.
Have fun watching your taxes go sky high to go towards unemployment for those out of work.

What I want them to do is have a believable and workable response plan. For example, there was a 1994 response plan for dealihg with a well leak in the gulf. One aspect was to have 5 fire boats on standby so that they could coral and burn significant quantities of oil at the sight. Guess what, there may have been 1 boat on the entire gulf coast. Obviously no one worked the plan.
I don't know if the 94 plan is a good one or not, but whatever the plan is they should maintain the capabilities to implement it. This might be some combination of govt and industy resources.

You have no clue what you are talking about. I suggest you make a trip to a Fourchon and see if you can find more than one boat.
C-Port is one hell of a city for one boat.

I'm specificly referring to fire boats that are designed to corral and burn oil at sea. They weren't immediately available.
