Only a few sequals are comparable to the original in my mind. Obvious choice is Empire Strikes Back. I think all of the Bourne movies were very well done.

Don't just do it, do it better. Aliens, Road Warrior.

There have been a few well done sequels (a couple that were arguably better than the original), but generall, sequels are made for one reason and one reason only: cash in on the success of the original without the need for a new idea.

The marketing is easier and more effective because the public is already familiar. While ratings for sequels may not be as high, sequels do what they were intended to do: make money.

i think the best trilogies or sequels are the ones that aren't done becuase the first one was so successful i think the best trilogies are the ones that were planned all along to do 3 of them. Like LOTR like, or the borne series even the star wars series. When you know you are going to make a 2nd and 3rd movie they are usually better.

Godfather two was good, but the first was better IMO. Also, G2 could've been two speparate movies.

Too bad Terminator and Lethal Weapon didn't stop at 3 movies. I think the second installments of both were the best of the bunch.

XMen 2 > XMen

Toy Story 3 > Toy Story

It can happen, but most of the time it doesn't work.

I think that the whole sequel not living up to the original is just a symptom of the fact that most movies that get sequels are really good. Obviously there are exceptions, but I think it's a good rule of thumb that the average movie w/ a sequel is better than the average movie that never gets a sequel. So the average sequel has a lot to live up to.

With that said: Rocky IV > Rocky III > Rocky II > Rocky >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Rocky V.

T2>Terminator
GF2=GF

And to whoever asked about why no love for Major League 2, it's because they took an awesome movie and made an idiotic PG-13 sequel to it. It was full of suck.

One of the rare times I disagree w/ you, etm. ML2 was awesome. The anger over Snipes not being there was offset by the addition of the Japanese guy and his interaction w/ Cerrano: "You have no MAAAAABULLS!!!!!!"

ML3 on the other hand, was chock-full of teh suck.
