Nutria
On WMAs and private property,
nutria may be taken recreationally by
licensed hunters from Sept. 1 - Feb.
28, during legal shooting hours by
any legal hunting method with a daily
limit of five. When taken with a shotgun,
steel shot must be used. On
WMAs during waterfowl seasons,
nutria may be taken only by the use of
shotguns with shot not larger than F
steel; during gun deer seasons on
WMAs, anyone taking nutria must
display 400 square inches of "Hunter
Orange" and wear a "Hunter Orange"
cap or hat. Recreational nutria hunters
must remove each nutria carcass in
whole condition from the hunting
area, except that nutria may be
gutted. Possession of detached nutria
parts, including nutria tails, by recreational
hunters is illegal. Nutria harvested
recreationally may not be
pelted nor may such nutria or any
nutria parts from recreationally taken
nutria be sold, including the tail.
Trespassing upon private property for
the purpose of taking nutria or other
fur bearing animals is punishable by
fines and possible jail time (R.S.
56.265). The Coastwide Nutria
Control Program is a separate program
and is in no way related to the
nutria recreational season. For questions
on the Coastwide Nutria Control
Program call the New Iberia office:
337-373-0032.
I was never aware that Nutra had a season much less a limit. I was reading through the regs posted in the other thread and stumbled across this.

Ever try eating one? I have been curious since they only eat plants the meat is probably decent. Much like a giant squirrel I would guess.

I've heard they are good to eat if cooked right, but I've never braved it

Probably because they don't want hunters in the woods out of season claiming they were hunting for nutria.

Same here. I may have to brave ridicule and give it a shot some time. I would imagine pot roasted with onions and gravy like a rabbit would be pretty good.

The old man across the street traps them year round. They have moved from the canal behind his house to his front yard. I'm tempted to shoot them when I see them in the mornings and evenings.

I went to nutria.com the website the state has on the little critters and I must say some of those propaganda recipes they have on there look pretty damn good. They claim it is a cross between dark meat turkey and rabbit.... Who wants to try it out and let us know???

I think John Folse has a recipe in his cookbook After the Hunt.... I'll check when I get home if I remember.
I need someone to brave it with me at my camp, preferably drunk. If it happens this winter I will report back to TD for the insight.

I have eaten just about everything you can catch or kill in south LA but for some reason I struggle with the idea of cleaning a nutria for meat. I think I am gonna do it.
Next time I see one of these frickers and I have a gun it is going to be dinner. For some reason I am not surprised no one has chimed in about eating one.

Last time I lived in the BR area there was a PSA type radio commercial by Gov. Foster asking Louisiana residents to eat more nutria.

one time I was camping in Calcasieu parish and I woke up surrounded by them. must have been 40 or 50.
ugh.
ugh.

I've had nutria sausage. It wasn't bad.
I'd eat one if someone else prepared it, but I just don't see myself shooting one, cleaning it, and then cooking it.

The meat is not that bad. I have eaten it pot fried before like rabbit. Was white and pretty tender. I have also eaten armadillo and that was better than the nutria. The meat looked like a small pig.

Worth going after?

If you want something different. I didn't cook it. There are way too many other good things to kill, clean and cook than those rats. I shoot them, cut the tail, and collect the 5 dollars.

This is the way I pretty much feel about it too. I just hate to miss out on something good that is easy to get

I thought you had to be registered as a trapper to collect the $5

I think you do.
