Offense

QB

Good QB with a live arm who can make some big plays. Still learning how to play in college and will make a bad throw/decision now and again. Grade: Good (B).

WR

They have three good receivers in Austin, Bailey, and Sanders who are fast and athletic. Grade: Good (B).

RB

Everyone knows about Noel Devine. No one playing college football has run for more yards than him. Grade: Excellent (A).

OL

Even some Mountaineer fans will admit they have problems here. They have not played particularly well and are undersized. Grade: Below Average (D).

Defense

DL

They have a NG and a DE who are solid players. Grade: Good (B).

LB

The weak link on the defense. No one here has stepped up to be a playmaker. Grade: Below Average (D).

Secondary

The strength of their defense. They will have 5 DBs on the field at a time and they are all fast and athletic. A solid CB who has returned to practice after being suspended for DUI and a good S are the leaders. Grade: Good (B).

Coaching

Stewart is a player's coach who is liked by his team but drives most of the Mountaineer fans crazy. Grade: Average (C).

LSU Keys to Winning

* We have a mismatch with our DL against their OL that we must exploit. Nevis needs to be disruptive and our DEs need to pressure their QB early and often to prevent him from getting comfortable and, hopefully, make some mistakes. He is a young QB who tends to be streaky and he has never played in an environment like he will Saturday night. Our defense and stadium crowd need to make it a miserable experience.

* Devine is a game changer capable of making big plays. We don't need to shut him down, we just need to contain him with our speed on defense and tackle well.

* Jefferson needs to step up with a few key throws to keep their defense from focusing on our running game. They will have a lot of DBs on the field so he needs to be careful and not throw INTs.

* We have more depth than they do. Pound them with our stable of RBs and slowly grind them down. Keeping their defense on the field will wear them out and, moreover, will keep their talented offense off the field.

Interesting Side Notes

* WV will come into this game pumped up not just because they get a chance to take on the SEC Saturday night in Tiger Stadium. Rather, they are well aware of the position a win puts them in for the rest of the season. There are no other ranked teams on their schedule.

* In their last 6 games against ranked opponents, WV is 5-1.

* In our last 3 games against ranked opponents, LSU is 0-3: #13 Penn State, #1 Alabama, #1 Florida.

* In our last 3 home games against ranked opponents, LSU is 0-3: #1 Alabama, #1 Florida, #7 Georgia.

IMO, the outcome of the game hinges upon whether or not we can get penetration and pressure with our front four. If we give Smith time to throw and allow Devine to get to the LB/secondary level consistently, we will be in trouble.

wouldn't a 3 3 5 defense be better for our running backs?

I think it will limit what we can do running the ball with slow developing reads and draws. I think its way better for our running backs, especially that little RS sweep that he's scored off a couple times now, but it's really going to test the agility, patience and intelligence of our offensive line. If they shift around right before the play our offensive lineman's blocking assignments change, but hopefully they'll have seen every variation 1000 times in practice so they won't have to think about it. I think the 3-3-5 will just reinforce our current offensive MO... they'll get alot of pressure on jefferson, do some good things, and we might not see some 9+ play drives, but we'll definitely make some very big plays because one missed tackle by a linebacker in a 3-3-5 or blown assignment could just easily lead to 90 yards as it would 10 yards versus other defenses.

Thanks for the breakdown.

That's what I was thinking. If we run Ridley, Blue, Ware and Ford at them, we should be able to pound on their DBs which should slow them down for our WRs.

I'd like to see us come out and run Ridley out of the Power-I a few times then take a few deep shots with the play action.

I believe the following is correct:
quote:

In our last 3 home games against ranked opponents, LSU is 0-3: #1 Alabama, #1 Florida, #7 Georgia.

You are right about the following, though:
quote:

In our last 3 games against ranked opponents, LSU is 0-3: #13 Penn State, #1 Alabama, #1 Florida
