I've been waiting for this to happen for some time and I think as crazy as the BCS gets sometimes, that it will happen. I will use Auburn and LSU as an example. Say Auburn wins out and stays no. 1 in the BCS. Say LSU wins out. They don't go to the SEC championship game, but are highly ranked. What if LSU ends up no. 2 in the BCS. (of course a lot of other teams would have to go south, but this is more about "what if") SEC usually has about 3+ teams in or around the top ten at the end of the year. SEC could even be more of a problem in a playoff system, having 3-5 teams in it, depending on bracket. Don't have a question. Just putting this up for discussion. Would like to hear if you think this is posssible (or is there a rule that says two teams from the same conference can't play for NC.:o)

We are not a good football team. If we beat Alabama, then entertain this conversation. Until then, don't worry about it.

The human voters would never allow it. If it looked like it they would vote one of us (i.e. us) like number 5 or so that we are dragged down out of the second BCS slot. The Humans want conference champions in the top slot no matter what. They have a history of doing this. Remember the huge jump we made in 2007 in the final poll because the humans didnt want to send Georgia to the MNC game because they did not win the SEC. They also dropped michigan down in 2003 I think even through they were #2 in the second to last poll.

There is no rule stating this.

If something really crazy happened, and LSU and Auburn were the only 1 loss teams left in the country, and Boise and TCU both had a loss; I could see this happening. It's an extreme long shot.

Not saying it CAN'T happen, but it WON'T happen. The voters won't allow it.

See-we're having this discussion because the current system is flawed when it comes to deciding which 2 teams should play for the NC. Again, best way to decide is on the field. I do believe the current BCS formula can with an accepted degree of statistical error pick the top 8 teams...after that, a playoff needs to decide who plays in the NC game-for the very scenario you just presented!!!

Statistical error would not be acceptable for the team that finished No. 9.

You may be right but no one cares about the 9th place team-we're trying to decide the 2 best teams and who should have the right to play for the NC-the 9th team can just like the 66th team in the NCAA basketball tourney can bitch all they want -my answer to that is you should have done more to not be that close to the edge. Many can agree or disagree with the 2 teams that end up in the NC using the current formula such as the case for Boise State and TCU. Many can say maybe they are not the 2 beat teams and the discussion usually includes teams 3 and 4....by going with an 8 team playoff, you will definitely have the 2 teams playing in the NC that deserve to be there!!!

frick them then

And I think it makes a lot more sense to keep it to a 4 team playoff

You don't want to water down the importance of regular season games

This. I could go the rest of my life without ever seeing a playoff system realized in college football.

You're right Powerman and the current formula address that because you have to win each week to be assured you will be in that group-its almost like every week is a huge playoff and as the season goes along, you get an idea based on the current formula which teams are for real.. A 4 team playoff is fine but the 5th team may be a 1 loss team from a tough conference-they have a better case than the 9th place team based on the formula but 8 teams will decrease that margin of error a little more than a 4 team playoff.
