Chris Paul is the best point guard in the league. The Hornets are playing great. Everything is good. What about his contract situation though? Obviously we'd keep him all year if the team keeps winning like this, but what should the team do if it gets to mid-season or so and he still hasn't signed an extension?

I'm hoping he'll sign an extension as much as anyone, but I don't want it to get to next summer and then have him leave and us not get anything in return.

By league rule, we can't sign him to an extension this year.

Oh, ok. Awesome. I thought his contract is up after this year because of all the stuff over the summer about him wanting to go to the Knicks. We should definitely hang onto him all this season.

CP3 will be here the rest of this year obviously but what might go in the hornets favor is what the new CBA contains in it after this season. IMO the Hornets will benifit from the new CBA and make it hard for Paul to leave.

Yeah, the new CBA would probably help our chances of keeping him. I read somewhere that the NBA is considering lowering the salary cap by like 1/3. I doubt anywhere he'd want to go would have space left to sign him.

That's not going to happen. It will almost certainly get lowered, but not near that much. That number is being thrown around as a form of posturing by either the owners or players. It seems like the owners.

Either way, there's a lot of talk of creating some sort of grandfathering provision for current contracts so that you don't throw the entire league out of whack.
