from The Advocate:

Redemptorist High School football coach Guy Mistretta resigned on Friday, ending an association that began in the 1970s when he was a ball boy for the Wolves.

“In the last week I’ve been contacted by some other places,” Mistretta said. “I knew if I decided to pursue any other opportunities the only fair thing to do would be to give my notice.

“That way, Redemptorist can get in there and do what needs to be done to get the best person possible to be the next coach.”

Mistretta, 41, is a 1987 Redemptorist graduate and has been the school’s head football coach for seven seasons. He started out as a ball boy for the Wolves in 1977 when his father, G.J. “Bucky” Mistretta, was the coach.

Mistretta’s 18-year coaching career has been spent at Redemptorist. He was promoted to head coach in January 2004.

Mistretta compiled a 70-18 record, including a Class 3A state title in 2005. His teams advanced to the playoffs in each of his seven seasons, making it to the quarterfinals the last two seasons.

The Wolves were ranked second in Class 3A throughout this season and were seeded second going into the playoffs. Redemptorist’s season ended a week ago with a 34-32 loss to No. 7-seed Patterson in the quarterfinal round. The Wolves posted a 10-2 record.

Before becoming head football coach, Mistretta served as the defensive coordinator for Redemptorist teams that won a Class 3A title in 2002 and a 4A title in 2003.

As an athlete, Mistretta was an all-state wrestler. He also served as wrestling coach for the Wolves before becoming head football coach, winning six state titles.

The Mistrettas are one of only two father-son duos to win state football titles in Louisiana. Bucky Mistretta won two state titles at Ascension Catholic-Donaldsonville. Last season, Haynesville’s David Franklin joined his father, former HHS coach Alton “Red” Franklin as a state champion coach.

“This really is very emotional for me,” Mistretta said. “Redemptorist has been home for me basically all my life. I grew up here, so in a way it’s sad. But in another way it’s exciting because I’m looking forward to some new challenges, whatever they might be.”

Mistretta declined to speculate about his future plans.

“I honestly don’t know,” Mistretta said. “I’ll start that process next. I wanted to make sure I did the right thing here (at Redemptorist) first.”

I heard rumors about this all year, guess its true.

I've never seen a HS team blow a lead in such awesome fashion as Mistretta and Redemptorist did at CHSNI in the quaterfinals last year. truly a spectacular display of coaching on his part.
