I have one in a closet somewhere that I have never shot.
If I wanted to shoot it, what ammo do I buy?

I believe it shoots 7.69x54r. I've been looking into these alot lately and I may be about to buy one. Alot of history involved with these guns, and they're cheap as hell right now.

I have a Hungarian model with the fixed bayonet, paid $89 for it at a gun show. Be careful a lot of that mil-surp ammo is corrosive and will rust your bore. Get some WWII era bore cleaner.

My dad has an old Spanish Mauser with a rusted bore. You think it's worth the trouble taking it to a gunsmith?
Sorry, bit of a hijack.

I have a Chinese NDM-86 sniper rifle that shoots the same round 7.62x54R and it is great on deer. Plus you can still find military ammo fairly cheap. Sealed tins of 440 rnds run around $100

7.62x54R ammo
Cheaper than dirt $94.97
7.62x54R (Rimmed), Russian Light Ball, 147 Grain Steel Core Full Metal Jacket Bullet, 440 Round Tin.
Russian military 7.62x54R ammunition, 147 grain, BT FMJ, Silver-tipped bullet produced from the 1970s to 1980s. Lead and steel core, steel cased, Berdan primed, and steel tip packed in a sealed 440 round spam can with 20 round sub packs, ideal for long term storage. This excellent ammo performs well in both old and new model firearms and is corrosive; clean your gun after using. Note: Some lots may not have the tip of the bullet painted silver. This ammo is still manufactured to the same specs. Can opener not included.
ETA: I have spent lots of money with them
