In Skip's final season as head coach we were playing a midweek game against Rent-A-Win University (I forget which one) and the first base umpire had missed several close calls at first base, or, at least that's what Skip thought.

In about the sixth or seventh inning, Skip shot out of the dugout and headed for the ump. He got in the ump's face, even turning his cap around to get closer. After about 2 minutes of taking abuse, the ump ejected Skip.

At his post-game press conference one reporter asked Skip what he had said that got him ejected.

Skip said, "He told me if I didn't shut up and go back to the dugout he was going to eject me. I told him, 'You can't eject me....I'm a LEGEND!' That's when he ejected me...."

It always cracked me up when he turned his cap around to get closer to the ump, then his head would start going back and forth.

Skip once said, Joe Dean made better decisions when drunk behind the wheel.

Given the size of nose he couldn't really have gotten that close.

I remember Skip doing this in the 97 (or 96?) Regional. Patrick Coogan had been called for a balk and the sight of Skip flipping that cap around (AFTER being tossed) whipped up the team and the fans and very likely was the factor in the Tigers winning the game.

I always enjoyed this: Starkville is an old Indian
word meaning trailer park(not exact words). Also,
anyone ever notice Jim Wells @ Alabama would walk
out to the pitcher with the same damn gait as
Skip did?

Yes! The same for Ole Miss coach, Mike Bianco. He even holds his elbows back just like Skip did. And he talks like Skip.

He just doesn't win like Skip.....

The MVSU coach walked slower than Skip. By the time he got in the 1B umps face, everybody would have forgotten what he went out there for.

I think he got tired of walking which is why he stopped and kicked dirt about half way down the 1st base line

Once we were playing Tulane in a midweek game and at the coaches committee meeting he told us that if we knew any Tulane grads who planned on coming up for the game to let them know if they put their diploma on the dash of their car, they could park in the handicap parking area.
