Spoilers starting immediately...

...So makes sure you've watched it before opening this thread.

Soooooooooo....

The story is loping along at regular Fringe pace... Until the last 5 minutes, that is.

I can safely sum up this episode by saying "We were all right. All of us... About EVERYTHING"

So riddle me this: Did that last bit of "reality" only come into existence when he got in the machine?

Just starting it up on the DVR. The stupid Ford product placement is pissing me off.

good question. I know Paycheck was a crap movie, but it's always what I think about in these situations. Does seeing the future cause the future you see to happen? In other words, does Peter return and tell everyone of doomsday. That information itself could cause the events leading to that doomsday.

A few observations:
1. From the 9/11/2001 and 9/11/2021 dedication plaque, we know that Peter is in the main universe future.
2. He's dressed in fatigues in what appears to be an end of the world disaster scenario.
3. Peter looks up at a tall modern building that is obviously in tact and apparently protected from the disaster. Is that the Massive Dynamic building?
4. He is addressed as Major Bishop by an agent/soldier in the Fringe division.

Apparently the recurring phenomenon of the universes colliding has led to anarchy. My guess is Peter will have an opportunity to see what has been done in the future to avert the disaster which obviously has not been successful and hoping use this insight back in the present to adjust/ course correct. As you suggest, in the back from the future paradox situations, you never know if information from the future led to reality or if it can be used to create a new reality/timeline.

Just finished watching this episode.

He's still obviously in the main universe with the 9/11/01 plaque. But how far in the future do you think he is? The plaque said something about 2021 but it could also be much further than that. Also what did the plaque say about 2021?

There was a horizontal line between the 2 dedication statements. The bottom line said:
DEDICATED TO THEIR MEMORIES
SEPTEMBER 11, 2021

It was like a re-dedication of the 9/11 event in 2021.

Peter also has a wedding band on in the future, and in the promo for next week he's looking at a child's drawing of a family. Presumably his?

Honestly, with a cliff hanger like the end of that episode, it baffles me that it wasn't the season finale. I also think Sam Weiss knows more than he's letting on to. I read on one forum that people are speculating that there could be 5 universes that are about to collide (the future being one of them) as represented by Sam's Newton's Cradle. A stretch but not a bad thought, either.

Yea, I know how you feel. The show has moved at such a fast pace I can't help but wonder what's left to be revealed. It's like the antithesis of LOST; almost too much information too fast.

I would not be surprised about the multiple universes theory. The ultimate question of course is how can balance be restored among the universes and what role does Peter and the doomsday machine play if any in restoring the balance. Obviously it's not as simple as Peter returning to the alt-universe since he has already done that. Then again he did so along with other members of the main universe.

I'm not exactly sure why but I am wondering if Walter bringing Peter back to his universe is really what started the chain of events that led to the imbalance/collision. I'm also wondering exactly how the observers fit into to the larger scheme of things. Apparently they are from the future and are aware of the impact of intervention though granted as that one observer cited, the repercussions can be as complex as a child continuing to search for a firefly.

If I understand it correctly, the bald guys were trying to prevent Peter from living (he died in the main universe and one of the bald guys interrupted Walter-nate just as he had discovered a cure for his Peter's illness) so there would never be a chance of the machine being used (in either universe).

Because Walter crossed universes to save the other Peter and because one of the bald guys gave in to his... humanity?... and saved Walter and Peter from drowning, the very chain of events they (as a group) were looking to head off has now come to pass.

the promo for the season finale said 15 years into the future, so 2026.

I think that the writers have been on a roll since they found out about the renewal. It couldn't have been easy to constantly have to plan for renewal/canceled contingencies while maintaining cohesiveness.

I'm just happy I'm not scheduled to work this coming Friday... This is gonna be a good one!

FWIW - In "real life" - the aftermath of this little exchange...

Olivia: I love you.

Peter: Wish me luck!

...would probably result in 4 episodes full of arguing and poor advice from drinking buddies.

I think they showed the building to be built at ground zero. I may need to re-watch to confirm.

I didn't catch that. I just thought they said Mr. Bishop. I did find it odd that he looked the same age even that was occurring fifteen years into the future.

That make sense and thanks for the awesome pic; looks just like the building they depicted.

I listened to it several times and it's hard to distinguish. He address Peter twice. The first time it does sound like "Mr. Bishop" but the second time it sounds more like "Major Bishop." And yes, he actually looks younger to me but it might be he short military style haircut.

It's going to be interesting to see where they go from here. I have to think that the next episode will have significant air time with Peter in the future. There's gotten to be some significant information to be gathered that helps him back in the present.

Him seeing the future could explain how the drawings for the machine had Peter and Olivia in them. The last person to use the machine saw them when he visited the future.

I really hope they show some other ones in the next season...perhaps Peter coming back from the future could trigger a cliffhanger that consists of another universe or two.

This has been a great season, for sure

I picture Peter Bishop and Han Solo in a bar saying something like "I know right? What am I a mind reader? I didn't think it would be the last time we saw each other so WTF is she so pissed about?"
