I FINALLY got to watch this yesterday. I liked it overall, but don't get the crushing love it always receives. What did I miss?

Good god, was Cybil Shepard fine when she was young.

WTF was up with the convenience store owner wearing the Tulane t-shirt?

Why did DeNiro want to kill Palantine?

I think this is one of, if not the most, overrated movies of all time.

It had a lot of shock value for its time. It was very graphic for a mainstream movie.

Because Palantine represented what Travis Bickle was not, someone who the Cybil Shepard character respected.

Indeed, she was mighty tasty. See Last Picture Show.

BTW Isn't it hard to believe Harvey Keitel was that young once.

WTF I totally missed this.

SPOILERS

I also think the message at the end might have been pretty strong and thought provoking at the time. A guy who goes on a rampage like that gets celebrated by every one, when we (the audience) know he is certifiably insane and may do something really heinous in the future.

I had a hard time reading it, but that is in fact what it says.

Also, it seems so unlikely that he wouldn't have gone straight to prison for being in that shootout.

Wasn't NYC choked up with crime and corruption at the time (more than usual, I guess)? It probably precipitated praise and vicarious catharsis seeing a charismatic guy taking up vigilante justice.

edit: Also, at the time before Scorsese's style was mimicked, it was probably tonally and stylistically unique.

I love it, but I love grainy, depressing movies with really messed up characters.

The music is awesome

As far as the movie goes, I like it, but I probably wouldn't include it on any all-time great list.

I thought of this as a parallel to the Jodie Foster story line. He thought Cybil Shepard's character was tied to the campaign like Jodie Foster's character was tied to the prostitution ring. In Fickle's delusional mind, he was playing the hero and trying to rescue two innocent women.

Supposedly it wasn't a porno movie.

I'm with you. The first time I saw it was at LSU at the theater in the Union. I was really pumped they were showing it and couldn't wait to see it, but left feeling disapoointed. I thought, maybe I missed something and I've seen 4 or 5 times since, but, still doesn't do it for me.

Err, just watch it again.

Believe me, this was pretty much all the proof one needs to know TB was just slightly "off".

Yeah. I view it as a companion to Mean Streets. Look at how Times Square has changed in the last three decades.

I'm not sure of the timing of Taxi Driver with Bernie Goetz, but it would be an interesting commentary on the guy. But I do think this is not one of Scorcese's better films.
