2005 Ford King Ranch

A friend is selling a 2005 F-150 King Ranch for $17k. It has about 80K miles and is in good shape as far as paint, body, and interior go. He did have to fix the transmission on it, but I don't exactly know what went wrong. KBB lists it at $19k. I'm a little worried about the transmission issue, but the only reason he is selling it is because dad will buy him a new one.
Is it worth it?
Eta. 2005 not a 2008

Even if you had to spend 4k to fix/replace a transmission, i think it's still a quality buy for the next 6-8 years.

just my opinion. Did he have a tuner or oversized tires or anything? I know some family members who have like 05's.

A bad trans is a pretty big deal if you're going to drop that much on that truck. I'd find out exactly whats wrong with it...cause one thing will lead to another, especially with a transmission...and that will lead to much more $$$ being spent.

4x4 V8 not sure of the specific engine or if they even vary in this package.
eta. it has after market tires and it was leveled. nice looking tires, but i don't know the specifics. i'm waiting for him to send them to me.

It's got the 5.4l Triton V8 motor.
ETA: Overall it's a good motor, but they are famous for breaking spark plugs in half which results in a very expensive repair job. I'd check with him to see if he's ever had the plugs changed or that issue addressed. If so, you should be fine. Aside from the transmission thing.

F150 =/= diesel. Only F250 or F350 can have a diesel.

how would the issue be addressed if it never happened, recall? is this something that all these motors have problems with?

ha, missed the F-150 part, for some reason thought this was a F-250 or 350
well i know nothing about f-150's

Yeah, pretty sure Ford either issued a recall for it, or just fixed it for a certain model year. With the truck being a 2008 model, the plug issue may have been addressed by Ford from the factory by then. Go read some forums online to get more info.
And it is more of something that could happen, rather than a guarantee it will. From what I read, it's a two piece plug design that breaks relatively easily resulting the mechanic having to drill and tap it out...something along those lines.
ETA: My sisters BF had a F150 King Ranch that had the plug issue, pretty sure he said they quoted him a couple thousand to fix it...so he bought another vehicle. Not a cheap fix at all.

My dad's had a leaky seal on the front differential when it was fairly new, like 30k miles. Dealership replaced it under warranty and he's had no problems since.

Yeah, like I said...its not a guarantee...just something that could happen when changing them/getting them changed. I think the OP will be okay since it's an '08. It seems to have been an issue on mostly 04-06ish trucks. Supposed to use a special tool to remove the plugs now. Ford issued a TSB for it.
To the OP: Don't let it scare you off though as I don't think it's THAT common of a problem, just something to be wary of when doing work on the motor. I'd be more concerned with the transmission problem the previous owner had.

I'm pretty sure they fixed the sparkplug crap by the time the 2008's came out. My father inlaw has an 06 and we fought getting that damn sparkplug out for
days

NOTE: Its a 2005.
I was wrong in the original post, and I won't touch a motor. So that's something a mechanic will have to do. Thanks for the information guys. I will definitely have to sleep on this for a while.

Damn...well yeah, supposedly that was in the prime of the plug problems. Aside from that...he's asking too much.
I'd say 13k is more of a fair number. I sold my 2004 Ram with 85,000-ish miles on it for $10,000...and it was in excellent shape because I babied the crap out of it.

Yea 17k seems high for an 05. The king ranch badge and nice leather don't bump the value up that much.
