"A few years from now, there's going to be four major conferences, and there may be 18-20 teams in those conferences. They're going to have championship games and there will be a playoff of maybe the top four teams. I don't think the Big 12 will be one of those [super conferences]. Eventually they [teams in the Big 12] are going to be going to different conferences anyway.
"You've got a chance to get in one of those leagues, otherwise you're going to be left out. Going to be probably 80 teams in major conferences, and the rest of them are going to be playing for something else."

Good find.

Does the SEC even want Texas A&M to be a member?
"I thought they did, now I'm not too sure. I thought there was a time they did. I think litigation always raises its head. They want to make sure if they do something of that nature, it's not going to cause them some problems television-wise. They'll probably have their attorneys look into it, and it'll probably take a while."

We all know this is the big-boy plan, long term (when they absolutely have to do it). But that will open the door for litigation and federal involvement that the BCS blocks. The BCS provides, in theory, all FBS school an opportunity to qualify for the national title game. A Super-Conference system would not.

Exactly. The Baylors of the world would unite. Imagine 40 schools with absolutely no upside fighting for their lives, along with many Dan Beebes.

A tsunami of change is coming to college football. If you go to 4 conferences that big, you are really creating 8 new conferences that will look very unfamiliar. Some faces will be familiar, but there will be a lot of new ones in your new digs.
I think people have seen this coming for a long time, but there was no clear path on how to get there. There were 6 major conferences none of them had the intention of being the odd man out. Then we saw the ACC rip the heart out of the Big East to get to 12. It pretty much neutered them. They will try and survive thru basketball, but I'm afraid football is driving this bus.
You still had 5 that wouldn't go away, but that is only because we never recognized the cancer that was present in one them. The cancer started when the Big 12 formed, but those on the outside didn't recognize it because the money wasn't so big. It matastasized where the world could see it when the selfishness became so apparent.
With the kind of money we are seeing today, there is no way the Big 12 can survive as it is too unstable and there is no way trust can be repaired. Anybody with an out will bail. If you're wondering why this sudden upheaval is occuring, look no further than Austin.

I wouldn't be surprised that there will be litigation, but I think this will work. What's happening here is a separation of the haves in FBS from the havenots. It's like the creation of another division.
The reason why Stallings is talking about 72-80 teams instead of 64, is to include those teams that have major investments and are power brokers in their state. Think the Baylor, TT, Boise, Iowa State types that none of the conferences are dying to invite.
I'm sure there will be a path available so new schools could join, but the barriers will probably be pretty stiff in terms of facilities and monies required. I think this can be designed to work. We already have divisions; this is just another.
