But I have no clue where to start. I know I don't want a revolver and have really only shot a 9mm. Looking to add a handgun to my rifle and shotgun collection.

I'm in the same boat. I was pretty much decided on a Springfield XDm .45, but now the more I look at them the more I want to blow extra on a 1911

The next pistol I want.

To the OP, I was joking about the desert eagle. get some makes from the suggestions you get here, but ultimately it's up to you. Figure out what you like and you'll be happy. Don't buy something because someone else says its the best gun ever.

I guess I'm really looking for good makes, as I'm not all that familiar with pistols.

Can't go wrong with either of those. OP just needs to figure out what size gun and caliber he wants and start looking from there

I would suggest buying some magazines(the paper kind) and looking at them a lot. It takes time to get familiar with the various nuances. There will be things you like and things you don't.
Hammer vs. striker
SA DA SA/DA
Barrel length
Ammo capacity
Safety types
Full/mid/compact/subcompact
Yada yada yada

Watch some good reviews on youtube. Lots there.

I did all this and still have not bought. My search though led me to 1911 to Hi-Power to CZ-75. I'd buy the CZ today if I were buying.

Unless they tell you to buy The Judge, because it IS the best gun ever.

(I am so ashamed that a handgun thread took this long to mention The Judge.)

Sell you a Beretta PX4 Storm in .40 cal. 4 boxes of shells and a holster. Only 200 rds through it, year old.

He said no revolvers, or I would have suggested it. I'm not ashamed to say I love my Judge.

we're really slipping.

Back on topic, a 1911 is not an appropriate 1st gun, but other than that, virtually any auto you find at a regular shop will be good.
