"It's not the same situation as it has been in months past or 18 months ago, where the league is in jeopardy," Self said, speaking during the Big 12's preview of the upcoming college basketball season. "I feel good about our league. I think our league's probably stronger today than it ever has been because you have key players in our league that seem to be on the same page more than they ever have been."

Mizzou under Stormin Norm, with Tubbs at OK, and Kansas under Roy was the the golden era of Big 12/8 basketball.

As of today, sure. Actually knowing nothing about the upcoming season, but traditionally the Big12 will be very strong to to bottom. CU and NU were just dead weight.

I don't blame Self for getting on his egg crate to spew out the party line...in fact, I expect that. Why? The answer is simple: Kansas has no where else to go but the Big X (or whatever the hell it is).

If the Big ? doesn't survive, the Jayhawks will be an orphan looking for a place to land and only an idiot, or a fool, would expect that place to be a BCS conference.

Any organization wants their most successful and recognizable employee to be their spokesperson and mouthpiece when addressing critical issues in public, Bill Self is all that Kansas has.

I've always known that football came first, but I've always assumed that part of that attitude was because I was born and raised in Texas and football is everything here.

Kansas is three years removed from their fifth national men's basketball championship. Kansas has the longest current streak of consecutive NCAA tournament appearances (22), the second-longest current streak of winning seasons (28), the most winning seasons in Division I history (92), the most conference championships in Division I history (54), the most first-team All Americans in Division I history (27) and the second-most wins all-time (2,038).

Thanks to Wikipedia for those stats.

It absolutely surreal to me that none of that means *anything* in conference realignment.

Until Fort Knox (I mean ESPN)jumps out there and executes multibillion dollar contracts with conferences for Basketball, this will be the norm.
Frankly, I don't see this changing anytime soon.

It must be humbling for coaches at big-time basketball schools with crappy football programs (Jim Boeheim, Jim Calhoun, Bill Self) to realize that they're playing second fiddle after all.

Turner Gill knows full well that he is playing second fiddle to Bill Self. Even brings his recruits to hoops games to try to get them to sign.

I would think that KU's hoops might be good enough to let them be a B1G football doormat if/when that league goes to 16. Outside the Big-12-2-1, that's their only other real option.

Gill may be second fiddle to Self, but Kansas basketball is second fiddle to Kansas football. Even at schools like Kansas, football is the tail wagging the dog.

Colin Cowherd mention something like that because of how football brings in more money to schools like KU, UNC, Duke, etc compared to Basketball Programs.

That sucks how one of the most historical college sports program could be left in the dust.

Kansas might have a home in the B1G. They are an AAU school.

Would love to see Bill Self in Baton Rouge. He's my wife's cousin.
