I'm having lots of company for Thanksgiving weekend, the entire weekend. I am making chicken and sausage gumbo and would like to buy a gallon or two of seafood gumbo for one of the meals. In Baton Rouge, what are your recommendations? Thanks.

Martini says Don's on Airline still has good gumbo. I haven't eaten at that one, but I love the shrimp gumbo at the one in Laffy. I order it and ask them to leave the shrimp raw, so they don't overcook when I heat it up.

You could actually make a good stock with shrimp shells and gumbo crab shells, make the gumbo sans the seafood, freeze the base, buy the seafood just before Thanksgiving, defrost the base and have some darn good seafood gumbo in which the seafood hasn't been cooked already. That was a long sentence, but it's a better idea IMHO.

Thanks, guys. I didn't know Chris's had gumbo, there is one close to my house. Gris, I think I am gonna run out of time to make a second gumbo with all the other meals I need to plan. I haven't had Don's gumbo in a while, glad to hear it's still good.

Grad, you could make that this weekend and freeze it, early. Anyway, if you ever want to do that, I call the seafood joints and ask them to save their shrimp shells for me when they're peeling. Never been turned down. Makes such a good stock and shrimp stock doesn't need to cook very long. I just add the shells and water and nothing else, since the gumbo will have whatever seasoning I want.

Don't get Chris. Get Don's or get Uncle O's at Harrells Ferry and Millerville around the corner from the Chris. Ouncy has been making it for years and selling by the gallon. Great stuff. Across from that Tiger Grill that used to be Uncle Os. I know. It's confusing.

Well, CW I am making a huge pot of chicken & sausage gumbo, having a house full of company and have other meals to plan/prepare, including the Thanksgiving meal for about 23 people. A gallon of a quality seafood gumbo would be a great addition, just wanted everyone's advise cuz I always cook my own gumbo! Appreciate the suggestions!
