LSU is a great Gameday experience. From Mike's cage, to Tiger Stadium, to the statues of Tigers all over campus. How cool would it be to have a statue of the original battalion that the Tigers derived thier name from outside of the stadium? I think it would serve as a great history lesson and memorial to our great mascot....that most people probably think is just another Tiger mascot. Just a thought, but think this would be awesome to have!

There should definitely be something to explain the history of the name. The Louisiana Tigers were a total group of badasses in the Civil War, feared as much by their own Confederate brethren as by the Yankees.

Really curious why this or something hasn't been done by the school. Even something on the side of the stadium or something. Maybe I just missed them before, but it seems like this year there were more Tiger statues around as opposed to just the one I usually see in front of Mike's cage and that's why it came to mind. Would be a neat and much needed addition.

It probably has more to do with political correctness than anything else. In fact, I'm willing to bet that's the number one reason.

Well another thing that should be added as near to the quad as possible is Wiliam T Sherman hall.

I doubt we'll ever get a building named after Sherman at LSU despite his history here.

I was just about to say It will come right after they name a major building after our first president.

If we are going to get all historical and stuff, you'd think the "anti-pc" crowd would be all for embracing ALL of LSU's history, in context in all it's ambiguous glory, but just like everyone else, they only want certain narratives told.

Some folks would say that they were a bunch of drunks and degenerates as likely to harm a Rebel as a Yankee.

One of my major causes over the years has been to have the ROTC building named after Sherman (if y'all notice, it sticks out that it's not named after anyone)....or to make it a little more palatable to the people who don't think the South lost the Civil War; Sherman-Chennault (another tiger connection there too...)

What I hope to do before i leave this five sided puzzle palace is get a M-4 tank for LSU, we can put it in the place of the Corporal missile in front of the ROTC building and call it the "Sherman Memorial Tank"....then when all the nay-sayers come up, simply ask the question: "what kind of tank is it?"

back on initial subject...a good place to put something would be as part of the war memorial on the parade grounds...

ALL of the Louisiana Tigers can be remembered, there were Louisiana units (935th Field Artillery)with the tiger insignia at Anzio, for exapmle...and Chennault's Flying Tigers can be mentioned as well....

If they build a new incinerator on campus they might consider using the name on that.

General Robert E. Lee valued them in battle. They were the only Confederate unit to hold their line at Spotsylvania in the Bloody Angle and they refused to retreat at Second Manassas even when they ran out of ammunition. The Louisiana Tigers were also the only Confederate outfit to break the Union lines at Gettysburg and hold their positions.

The Georgians weren't much better.

LINK

quote:

Within six months after arriving in Virginia, members of Wheat’s Battalion engaged in a drunken street brawl in Lynchburg, fought the First Kentucky with rocks in camp, and lit into the 21st Georgia when the Georgians ran off with the Louisianians’ whiskey bottle. In the latter incident, 10 members of the Tiger Rifles took on an entire company of Georgians and were badly beaten. The Georgians’ captain apologized for his men’s theft but warned the bloodied Tigers they could have been killed if had not intervened. While walking away, one defiant Tiger called over his shoulder, “We are much obliged, sor, but Wheat’s Battalion kin clean up the whole damn Twenty-first Georgia any time.”

Bunch of thieving hillbillies from Georgia.

Good luck.
