Defrosting a turkey

So, the wife got a coupon for a free turkey from the hospital. I go down to the store and redeem it for a large frozen turkey.
I put it in the fridge to defrost 4 days ago. Just checked it. If I dropped in on the driveway the concrete would crack. The exterior is still frozen solid.
Any tips?
One person suggested leaving it out on the counter for two hours, then back in the fridge for two, etc.
Another suggested submerging in water for 3 hours a day for two days.
My concern is that the exterior may get defrosted 10 days before the center...and go bad.

Put into the sink with cold water(tap) over it, give it about four hours.

Put in the sink and fill with cool water. It will defrost in several hours. If you don't want to cook it then put back in fridge for up to a couple of days.

When do you plan on cooking it?

The date of cooking doesn't matter. My concern is that if I put it in water for 4 hours as suggested the exterior will be defrosted but the center still frozen for days.
This sucker must have been frozen for five years.

Cavity have big hole at both ends of bird, temperture equilibrium of the water will be the deciding factor, if needed just repeat the process in a couple of hours, and giving it a think you can brine it in the sink while defrosting it.

Thanks. Will give it a shot.

If timing is not as issue, throw it into your ice chest, cover with tap or water from the garden hose and wait a couple days.

Ya know, I did that years ago but it was for brining. I guess I could add salt to the water and get the same effect.

I had the same thing happen to me. The turkey didn't defrost in the refrigerator for 3 days. I followed the package directions to fill the sink with cold water and change the water every 30 minutes for each pound of turkey. I found that I could wait 45 minutes to an hour to change the water probably because we have really cold well water and my sink is heavy stainless. Anyway, it worked like a charm.
