I understand why people talk shite about the guy, I get it. He makes pop songs, but he does it in smart ways. I used to hate the guy, but when I picked up his album 'Continuum' I saw the genius musician he is. Now, as great as he is on albums, he is so much better live. Saw the guy twice. When guys like BB King, Clapton, and Buddy Guy give you the nod, I'd say you are doing something right. SRV's guitar tech said, and I'm paraphrasing here, no one can play like Stevie, but John is one of the few to do him justice. As a guitar player he is up there as one of my biggest influences along with the greats. He is keeping real music alive. Here is a live video, tell me this guy isn't good. John Mayer - Belief (Live in LA)

Don't know about artist. Musician maybe, guitarist probably...and I'm going under assumption that generation equals 20 years or so. I could see an arguement that Mayer is one of the better guitarist of the last 20 years.

i will say, one time an ex girlfriend dragged me to see him when he came to jazzfest. i was fine with it because at least i got to listen to galactic open up for him. his show was very pussified and i never did like the guy....but for galactic's last song, mayer came out and just jammed with them for a good 10-15 minutes. he really really blew me away

He is an excellent guitarist and I give him credit for that. I always admire some great blues from a strat. He is nowhere close to any "best" lists.

His music is pussy shite and his voice grates on me. All im sayin'.

His John Mayer Trio Album (Try!) was pretty damn good. I always felt like he underperformed with his other music by going with the overproduced, cliche pop route. But, he's sold a shite ton of records and he can play the hell out of the guitar. I'll give him that.

I envy his guitar skills. The only thing worse than his singing is actually watching him while he sings.

i like him a lot. Vultures, Edge of Desire, Slow Dancing In A Burning Room and I Don't Trust Myself are my favorite songs of his. If more ppl could see him at festivals or his smaller shows they would get to see him do all his great guitar stuff and see there is more to him than the pop music put out on the radio. I think at some point we will see him quit the pop stuff alltogether and stick to playing the blues.
