Does anyone think we will ever see this happen again? Someone in the starting rotation plus playing another position when they are not pitching. I'll hang up and listen.

Unless there was a salary cap, or someone was just ridiculously good hitter and pitcher, why would you risk it?

To answer your question, no.

Doubt it. There are very few players that could or would do it today. Carlos Zambrano has been used as a pinch hitter because he's a legit decent hitter. The only other pitchers I remember recently playing the field are Micah Owings and Brooks Kieschnick.

Just thinking about it on the way to class this morning. The Babe did it, but obviously he is one of the GOATs. In our era, the only one to jump out to me, who MIGHT, have pulled it off, is Huddy.

baseball is so skill-based and requires such a refined skillset that i just can't see how a person could develop an adequate skillset to field, hit, and pitch as a moderate level

Great insight! You should be nominated for poster of the year!

Brooks Kieschnick pitched in relief, played left field, was a DH, and pinch hit.

Probably was, he wasn't really good at any of it.

He's still the only recent player I can think of that was used regularly as a pitcher but also started some games at another position. Owings never played another position in the field, just pinch hit.

Are you sure? I thought I remember Owings at least playing 1B in late innings, especially with the Reds.

Nope. You really have to focus on your pitching or hitting separate from each other. When Ike Davis went to ASU, he was good enough to do both as a lefty pitcher and 1B. He did start his freshman season doing a little of both. Supposedly his dad (ex MLB relief pitcher) made it clear to Murphy that he needs to bat and play the field exclusively. His reasoning being that if hitting doesn't work out, it would be much easier to fall back on his left arm and make a run at pitching.

People can say what they want about Micah Owings and Carlos Zambrano as hitters, but give them 500 ABs and there is no way they are productive on a MLB level.

His baseball reference page only had him at P defensively. That's all I was going on. LINK

I'm pretty damn impressed with Brian Bogusevic's journey to the majors. Drafted as a pitcher in the 1st round and moved to the OF. One of the fastest guys on the Stros and now starting in RF.

Micah Owings could hit pretty decent in a full season if Bogusevic can do it.

Rick Ankiel made the conversion, but you just can't do both at this level of competition.

Roy Oswalt had to go to left field in one of the games that went to extras and all the bench players had pinch hit

Rick Ankiel made it to the majors as a pitcher. He started to suck, went back to the minors, and came back to the majors as an outfielder.
