Something that has always bugged me is how often great players blast a short free kick over the goal. I know it's difficult to get it up-and-down or around the wall, but I've seen plenty of high school players do it. It seems like what set David Beckham apart was not that his kicks were better than what anyone else could produce but that he put it on frame most of the time and gave it a chance to go in. Why do you guys think short free kicks don't result in goals more often?

Professional goalies are good, if you're closer to the goal it's difficult to get the ball up and down over the wall, in order to beat the goalie a player has to hit the ball with curling movement but also with a lot of pace to prevent the keeper from reacting to it. It's a difficult skill to master

Goalies are good professionally, thats why I think these kicks would be better taken indirect. I'd much rather put the ball somewhere where the defense isn't setup to stop. At some point you have to step back and say its not a legit scoring opportunity to go direct.

I agree that teams can be more creative with setting up good shots away from the spot of the kick. This is a good example.

IMO unless you have a Juninho on your squad, when you have kicks fairly close it's better to have quick 1-2 passes with a player making a run off the wall or a through ball towards goal with a timed run keeping yourself onsides. Defenses are never expecting it, and always caught flat footed.

Height and athleticism of players in the wall

I don't think that too many high school players are hitting 25+ yd free kicks

It should not be that hard.

I make them on FIFA all the time.

I don't buy this. My guess is that the starting lineup for Barcelona isn't any bigger than the starting lineup for Catholic High. How would their wall be any more effective?

Lionel Messi isn't standing in the center of it:

Would you rather attempt to hit a shot over a six man catholic high wall, or this?

Clearly, this is variable, but I would assume that, on average, professional teams could assemble a taller and more athletic wall than your average US high school team

ETA Heights:

midget, 6',6'4", 6'2", midget

6'1", 6'1", 6'1", 6'4", 6', 6'

The two major variables are the GK and the wall. I'd wager that nearly all teams in major leagues could assemble a larger and more athletic wall than any high school team. Also there are very few GKs under 6' in major football. Often they are much larger. The ball must be hit with pace and curve, and most players get way under the ball. I'd wager that most FKs in this range, which don't happen that often (in the range of the goal mouth where defenders are weary of going in) are hit softer than they should be. It would be an interesing thing to study.

I'm bumping this thread after the events of last night's game - why is it so hard to put 20-30 yd free kicks on frame?
