Just finished a pastrami and swiss at Steins in uptown, and when I'm eating it I'm elated and in my happy place. I finish and leave and am faced with the stark reality on my way back to BR that there isn't one single place in all of BR that I can find anything close to the level of WOW that I just had at a freaking hole in the wall in uptown, and that's a fact.

Why can't there be one obscure little kick arse amazing deli like this in a city of 700k greater area? ONE? Anthony's is great, but not the same and seriously, Steins is always kick arse, but it's one of MANY MANY MANY very similar in quality. All I'm looking for is 1 of the sort.

Right... Sorry about my regular pessimistic rant , but sometimes that which stares us in the face must be questioned and answered, or at least acknowledged that it's in the room looking right at you.

Probably best just to ignore the 800 lb gorilla in the room. Or maybe deny it's a gorilla, and say it's a bunch of daisies instead.

Ladies and gentlemen... Pay no attention to what many say is a gorilla in the room. If you say it's a field of daisies instead, you'll feel better about it and before long you'll see daisies instead.

BR could have the best deli in the world and you would shite on it b/c you've already made your mind up

that "happy feeling" you described earlier is all in your head. i could take subway or some other chain sandwich shop, move its contents to the place you went, and you'd proclaim it superior to anything BR has to offer b/c you WANT it to be better

it's somewhat irrelevant. you've already determined (in your head) that BR is inferior to nola, so your brain will make you enjoy the food you eat in nola more. our appreciation of "good food" is largely mental (assuming it rises above the level of literally eating shite)

If Slow's premise is correct, how exactly would he be able to "prove you wrong" by picking a place?

That's assuming his premise is correct, which it's not, and I have a very good reason for it, but I want to hear the place in BR that is even on par, just one place. Not too much to ask for someone saying my perspective is skewed. What about Slow's perspective?

There is truth in that, but OTOH Baton Rouge is still head and shoulders above almost every city its size (and many considerably larger) that I've ever visited. It could be much worse.

....and thus

The Quality of Citizens in N.O > The Quality of Citizens in B.R.

New Orleanians, you should be proud. You are a better lot than those sods up the road in B.R. You have a deli, they only make sammiches

Literally the exact same thing I had for lunch, on marble rye with spicy mustard and a cream soda

More or less the equivalent Dan has spent on new clothes in the past decade?
