They totally ignored the graphics-driven hype wave of this generation and sold an unbelievable amount of consoles. I don't know if it was because buying into the wave would have meant operating at a loss for a company smaller than MS/Sony trying to keep up with heavyweights or they had supreme faith in motion controls.

I think they value the games themselves and the experience playing them. I also think they underestimated when they made the wii originally the value had graphics would have.

Because that market plan didn't work. N64 was more powerful than PSX, PSX sold more. Gamecube was more powerful than the PS2, PS2 sold way more. So they just decided to say "to hell with the graphics" and approach making a console from a completely different angle. They were more concerned with having games with more creativity than great graphics, since its creativity that makes great games, not great graphics.

I don't think they underestimated it at all. They tried that the previous two generations, and it didn't work for the most part. It seems to me that they sold way more consoles than Microsoft or Sony. Their plan worked for this generation, and they won this console war.

This. Everyone rags Nintendo for being "kiddy" and not competing in the graphics department, but all those people fail to realize that when Nintendo went the graphics superiority route, they lost.

I think with the WiiU they are trying to find a middle ground. Affordable, family oriented, with some decent power underneath.

I feel like they are going after the younger market these days. Most of their games feel like they are for young kids especially with the Japanese anime look some have.

Judging by the sales of the Nintendo Wii and its handhelds. Video game consumers as a whole don't invest a whole lot of stock into visuals.

One thing about going the "kiddy" route is that they are tapping in early to the next generation of people with money to buy video games. I'm going to have to look up what their market share is.

Nintendo appeals to young and olds...when's the last time you saw Grandma BLOP'in? Correct answer is never because she was kicking your arse in Wii bowling

I vehemently disagree with this statement. First, what people expect from a handheld gaming device is markedly different that what they expect from a home console. Second, the Wii offered something that no mainstream console had ever offered before, that is, motion control. My step-mom has a Wii. My girlfriend has a Wii. Neither would ever even CONSIDER purchasing a WiiU. Perfect storm. They sold a crapload of consoles this generation and managed to tap into the non-gamer market, but we'll see if that translates into continued sales in the next generation. I tend to think it won't.

The Wii did well with the physicality of playing it. Has the Kinect flipped the field on them?

Or just putting Mario in everything.

I think it has, and to a lesser extent, the Move as well. Even if it hasn't completely flipped the field it has diminished the degree to which the Wii is unique.

And again -- what are the odds the WiiU can generate sales by tapping into that non-gamer market in the same way that the Wii did? I feel like Nintendo sold their soul with the Wii (by that I mean moved massive quantity in the short-term) unless they can continue to innovate to the same degree they did with the Wii.

They lost the hardcore gaming market, and they've had expand their target audience to maintain their market share. Didn't really have much of a choice - Microsoft and Sony are following the same basic business model, Nintendo fell behind, and the only way to catch back up was to broaden the appeal of their system by an "out-of-the-box" system design a la Wii, DS, Wii U

No. They sold more consoles to grandparents and 30+ year olds. Parents with young children that actually monitor what they play bought Wii's because it was clearly the more family-friendly console. 80% of the games for the Wii are garbage to anyone 16 and older. The Wii sold because you have to have one to play the new Zeldas and Marios. Period.

Yeah we had to put up with shite like Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Banjo Kazooie/Tooie, Donkey Kong 64, Mario 64, Mario Kart, Mario Tennis/Golf, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Star Fox, and Super Smash Bros. What a complete failure of an approach.

Which means didily shite for winning the console war. Wii sold 30 million more consoles than either the PS3 or the 360. N64 has a much better library than the PSX, but that doesn't mean shite for winning the console war.

And the original Playstation still literally tripled the sales of the N64, despite having an inferior game library. I don't think you know at all what you're talking about.
