I want to get into kayak fishing. The plan is start small in family pond then move onto reds in the marsh. I started off team Ascend looking at the 12 foot SOT. After much research it seems solid but a big complaint is oil canning and of course that's a bigger issue in the LA summers. It comes rigged nicely. My new dilemma is the KC. I've been watching too many of those videos and started second guessing myself. The idea of enoug stability to stand and the comfort of sitting high on the KC sounds way better for me as a newbie. I've wanted a yak for over a year and I'm ready to pull the trigger. My buddy is also interested and he's leaning towards the Hobie mirage drive. I know price differences between the FS12T and the KC is huge but I figure if I decide to sell it the KC will hold value well. Even my stingy arse father votes for the KC. Demo days sound great but I can't demo the Ascend since BPS doesn't participate. I've been so excited about the idea of yak angling for so long I can't imagine not enjoying it. I know we have a ton of OB'ers on both teams so put in that $0.02!

Maiden voyage in mine today. Other than the wind blowing way worse than the weatherman predicted everything was great.

How much slower than the Ascend and the mirage drive are we talking? I don't want to be lagging behind my buddy too much.

Just one. Lil Josey wasn't real content with staying much longer after he dropped his pole in the water. I didn't want to stay any longer fighting that wind.

Good maiden voyage though. I like it. Seats are very comfortable.

Comfort is definitely a factor is my attraction to the KC. Sitting higher is far more appealing than being restricted to sitting with my legs out for hours. I know Jackson has a good product but they just don't seem as stable as the KC after watching someone cast netting from it.

The KC or a paddle board is what I'm going to go with.

Maybe a dumb question (I know nothing about yaks), but is there such thing as a little outrigger you can attach for stability?

I'm sure I'd rather just buy a stable kayak than spend the money and get the added weight of an outrigger. They probably slow you down when deployed and I don't want to pick them up constantly.

Again, I know nothing about these things, so bear with me.

Isn't a kayak inherently unstable? I'm seeing pictures of these kayaks getting bigger and bigger, so at what point does it evolve back into the little Jon boat I used to put atop my '73 Malibou?

The KC falls into a hybrid kayak/canoe category. I think the beauty of the kayaks is better tracking and more efficiency when paddling than a canoe or pirogue but with obvious stability losses.

The initials on that soft sided cooler in no way shape or form match up to El Josey Wales

I don't think you're in danger of the ATF finding you

No shyt! I can maybe see where a kayak could be fun for just a sight-seeing stroll on a waterway, maybe; however, there is NO WAY I could enjoy fishing from a kayak.

I'd even take a 10 ft Jon first. If I can't get there in that, screw 'em.
